Regnart Creek Trail Wins Award Before it Opens!
|
|
The Silicon Valley chapter of the American Public Works Association honored Cupertino in May during its 2022 Association Project Awards. It recognized the Regnart Creek Trail project with the Best Project Award in the $2-5M Transportation category! Many kudos to all the hard working engineers, designers, contractors, community members, Commissioners, and City Council Members who helped make this project a reality.
The trail and privacy fencing for neighbors bordering the trail are due to be completed in the next few months. We invite you to walk and ride on this award-winning trail when it opens next fall! We'll be sure to provide details when the time comes.

Mini Summer Bike Challenges:
June 1 to July 31
Cupertino is a wonderful place to ride a bike! The weather is beautiful most of the year, most of the city is flat, and there are miles of trails, bike lanes, and bike boulevards throughout the City which make biking safe, easy, and enjoyable. To continue our tradition of encouraging the community to get out and ride a bike during the summer, we are offering two mini challenges this summer:
Ride to the Library!
SR2S is partnering with the Cupertino Public Library to sponsor a "Ride to the Library" Challenge. Bike to the library this summer to collect your prize!

Show and Tell: How Much Can You Carry?
What’s the biggest, heaviest, wackiest thing you’ve ever transported on a bike? Email pictures and stories by July 31, along with any bike-carrying tips and tricks, to saferoutes@cupertino.org with Subject line: "Look What I Can Carry!" We’ll publish the best in future newsletters, and you'll have a chance to win prize!

Be Visible
Clip extra reflectors onto your packages if they block your regular ones. Make sure drivers can see those sparkling, shimmering lights.
|
Be Secure
Cupertino's Streets Crew does a fabulous job keeping the pavement smooth, but bumps do happen. Tie down all items securely. Cargo nets and bungie cords are your friends.
|
Be Safe
Carry heavy items on the back of your bike, keeping the front basket for light or fragile items. Never hang things from your handlebars. It’s hard to steer with lots of weight on your handlebars.

We Need a Few Good Parents!
Parent Champions are critical to the success of Safe Routes to School (SR2S). They know the ins and outs of school traffic, and what is needed to make the commute safer and more enjoyable for students. They know what events are happening on campus and are allies that can help bring SR2S messaging and events to schools.
Would you like to work with us and your child's school to help make sure your school is educating and encouraging students to walk, bike, and carpool to school? Join our working group and become a SR2S Parent Champion! Working Group dates and schools in need of a Parent Champion are listed below.
If you aren't ready to commit to ten meetings next school year, there are many other ways parents can help out. If you're interested in getting involved in a big or small way, please take our SR2S Parent Volunteer Survey to let us know what would interest you:

New Second Grade Pedestrian Education Program |
|
Such simple words and yet such a powerful concept! Second graders are getting lessons on how to keep themselves and their families safe when walking to school and around town. It’s a new program, sponsored by SR2S and paid for by Santa Clara County's 2016 Measure B funds. The city-wide roll-out was slowed by the COVID shutdowns, but both Faria and Regnart students had a chance participate this spring. The students received a safety presentation on day one and then had a chance to test their fledgling skills during a walking field trip the following day. Ask them to teach you what they learned!
We’re currently scheduling sessions for next fall with the elementary schools in Cupertino. If you want to make sure that your school implements this great new program, please take the survey above and indicate your interest in bringing Ped Ed to the second graders at your school.

Middle School Bike Skills
Registration is still open for summer bike workshops in July and August! Give your child (and yourself) the gift of bike safety skills and independence this summer. These workshops are designed for students entering middle school in school year 2022/23. Workshops prepare students to ride to school and beyond with a crash course on the rules of the road, practice with bike handling skills, and a neighborhood bike ride to tie it all together. Each student is expected to attend with a guardian, who will also participate in the workshop. Learn more and sign up here:

Orange Avenue Sidewalk Improvements Project
The City of Cupertino will be starting its Orange Avenue Sidewalk Improvements Project on June 10, once Cupertino Union and Fremont Union High School District schools are out for the summer. The project is intended to close sidewalk gaps (like the one pictured here) and improve conditions along Orange Avenue for students walking to the tri-school area of Lincoln Elementary, Monta Vista High, and Kennedy Middle schools. The project spans Orange Avenue from McClellan Road to Stevens Creek Boulevard.
The work is expected to last four months, continuing into October. Work will be restricted once school resumes in the fall, to limit impacts to school traffic. Utility work (moving the utility poles) will follow the sidewalk project and is expected to be done by the end of the calendar year.
Please direct any questions you may have about this project to its Project Manager: John Raaymakers: johnr@cupertino.org
