Parking Enforcement to Resume at Cupertino Civic Center on May 2
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Cupertino relaxed parking enforcement at the Cupertino Civic Center. However, full parking enforcement will be reinstituted beginning Monday, May 2. The Cupertino Civic Center parking lots include the spaces by:
- Cupertino City Hall

- Cupertino Library
Any parking spaces marked specifically for permit parking should only be used by individuals with those permits. Enforcement will also resume for the parking spaces along Torre Avenue and Rodrigues Avenue.
Housing Element Update
Cupertino’s 6th Cycle Housing Element Update (2023-2031) continues to press on!
As a follow-up to its January 25 meeting, the Planning Commission met on February 22 and continued its discussion of the Sites Selection Inventory process. The Sites Selection Inventory process is the key next step in the Housing Element Update that will establish the properties that can accommodate Cupertino’s future housing needs. The Commission will continue this discussion at its April 26 meeting where there will be an effort made to categorize sites according to their development feasibility within the 2023-2031 Housing Element timeframe.
In addition, at the March 8 City Council meeting, the Council moved to create a Community Engagement Plan - Strategic Advisory Committee that will be comprised of two Councilmembers and the Housing and Planning Commission chairs. This committee will provide guidance in creating a public outreach and engagement strategy for the Housing Element Update that meets State requirements to Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing.
The community is encouraged to subscribe on the City’s website for updates and visit the webpage frequently to engage in the process, provide feedback, find key documents, see upcoming meeting dates and times, and learn other information.
Please note that on the website, the City is also inviting interested Cupertino property owners to consider completing the Property Owners Form. The City would love to hear from property owners who may be interested in future housing development.
Upcoming Community Engagement Opportunities:
2022 Compost Site Season Begins
Each year, the City of Cupertino provides our community an opportunity to pick up bulk garden compost at no charge for home landscaping use. The compost is made available at the City’s Compost Site located at 12100 Stevens Canyon Road, across from the Stevens Creek dam parking lot.
This year, the site is scheduled to open on Friday, March 25 and will close for the season on Saturday, October 29. The site is open for residents, when conditions allow, on Friday and Saturday mornings between 8 a.m. and noon. Residents can call the Compost Hotline at (408) 777-1320 to check if the site is open, as it may not be open if there was a recent rain event.
In addition, the City has partnered with the City of Sunnyvale this year to provide another opportunity for Cupertino residents to pick up free compost and mulch at Sunnyvale’s SMaRT Station, located at 301 Carl Road in Sunnyvale. This new trial agreement began on March 21 and will run through September 2023. Pickup is available during the SMaRT Station’s normal hours of operation between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. seven days a week. The agreement is for compost only – Cupertino residents may not bring items for disposal.
At both compost sites, Cupertino residents will need to show proof of residency and bring their own shovels and containers. For more details about each site, visit our Compost Site webpage. For questions, contact the Environmental Programs Division at (408) 777-3236 or environmental@cupertino.org.

Help Us Make Cupertino Roads Safer
The City is developing a Local Road Safety Plan (LRSP), which will identify safety patterns throughout the City and use data-driven collision analysis of local roadways to identify transportation safety improvement needs. This includes pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular safety improvements. The LRSP will also result in a toolbox of countermeasures to address the safety patterns and proposed projects to improve safety at key locations.
Share your input at the upcoming LRSP Virtual Community Meeting on Wednesday, March 30 at 6 p.m. Register in advance for this meeting here.
Residents can also report areas of concerns, provide feedback, and help make Cupertino roadways safer by visiting engagecupertino.org/lrsp.
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in partnership with City of Cupertino, is also currently developing a separate Local Roads Safety Plan, geared towards improving traffic safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and drivers throughout the entire county. To learn more about the project, please visit the project website at https://tjkmweb.wixsite.com/vtalrsp.
