New Protected Bike Lanes on Mary Avenue
The Mary Avenue Protected Bikeway Project is nearing completion, with final touches being completed on the new roadway layout. It is located on Mary Avenue between Stevens Creek Boulevard and the Don Burnett Bicycle Footbridge.
After being freshly resurfaced, the new configuration along Mary Avenue switches the position of parking lanes and bike lanes, with bike lanes now adjacent to the curb to provide greater protection for cyclists.
In addition, there is now space separating the parking lanes and bike lanes to reduce the chances of vehicle doors from encroaching into the bike lanes. |
|
|
Finally, the project narrows travel lanes in both directions to discourage drivers from speeding. These improvements are intended to eliminate conflicts between moving vehicles and cyclists.
|
|
Help keep our roads and bicyclists safe by not parking in the bike lane and spreading the word about the new protected bikeway. |
City's Local Road Safety Plan Open for Feedback
The City of Cupertino is developing a comprehensive Local Road Safety Plan (LRSP) to enhance traffic safety for all modes of transportation and for all ages and abilities.
The LRSP will be achieved through a process that relies on the evaluation of a comprehensive collision database, partnership with stakeholders, and public outreach using the four "E's" of traffic safety: engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency medical services.
Participate by giving feedback at engagecupertino.org/lrsp.
Cupertino Housing Element 2023-2031 Update
Cupertino's Sixth Cycle Housing Element 2023-2031 Update is continuing to garner community input through public outreach and engagement efforts.
The December 9 Housing Element Community Workshop was a success (video can be found here) and had more than 75 participants learn about the City's Housing Element Update and the Cupertino Housing Simulator (also called the Balancing Act). The Cupertino Housing Simulator is available now for the public to provide input on where to focus future housing opportunities in Cupertino.
The community is encouraged to subscribe on the City's Housing Element Update website for updates. Visit the webpage frequently and engage in the process, provide feedback, find key documents, see upcoming meeting dates and times, and learn other information.
An upcoming community engagement opportunity is the Planning Commission Meeting on January 25, 2022 at 6:45 p.m.
Via-Cupertino Relaunch a Success
The relaunch of the Via-Cupertino community shuttle program has been a success over the past two months. After a year-long pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Via was relaunched in October and ridership has steadily grown since.
Via relaunched with new hours of operation, new vans, and new fares. Service resumed on October 19 with a fleet of nine new Chrysler Pacificas and Dodge Caravans. The vans now feature bicycle racks (except for the two wheelchair accessible vans). For greatest protection during the COVID-19 pandemic, riders are required to wear face coverings and plexiglass dividers have been installed between the driver and passengers. |

- The busiest days of the week are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with up to 45 trips per day.
- The busiest time of the day is 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- Most popular pickup spots are Cupertino High School, Monta Vista High School, and Kennedy Middle School.
Aside from the heavy student use, the next most popular dropoff and pickup stop is the Sunnyvale Caltrain Station.
The above bar chart shows the drop in ridership at the onset of COVID-19, and more recently a steady growth in ridership since the relaunch in October.
To date, Via-Cupertino vans have completed 15,886 trips with 925 of those being completed since service resumed this October.

Signing with Santa
On Saturday, December 11, the City's Parks and Recreation Department hosted the second annual Signing Santa event. This event provided an opportunity for deaf and hard-of-hearing children to talk to Santa using American Sign Language.
Santa was accompanied by an interpreter so he was able to communicate with all attendees. More than 25 people attended the event and enjoyed crafts, cookies, and most importantly, quality time with Santa.
Feedback from participants was heartwarming with one grandmother telling Santa, "Ever deaf baby needs a deaf Santa." Another grateful parent thanked Santa and said, "Thank you for providing equal access to these deaf kids."
Santa Visits Cupertino in Santamobile
Santa Visits returned to Cupertino and Santa came in his new Santamobile!
Santa and his elf took a break from their holiday preparations to visit the residents of Cupertino in his fully decked-out Santamobile. Families registered for 15-minute visits during the weekends of December 10 and 17.
Santa Visits looked a little different this year as Santa and his elf made outdoor appearances in the Santamobile, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. |

Two participating residents had the following to share:
- "The visit was soooooooo wonderful. It was a little bit of normalcy and made my little guy so happy. I just wanted to thank you and the team at Cupertino Parks and Rec.”
- "I love the Santa visits. We have participated every year since 2017. I am so thankful to the City for offering such a wonderful program."
