Cupertino's Sixth Cycle Housing Element 2023-2031 Update is underway. The Housing Element Update will identify where and how the City of Cupertino will accommodate existing and projected future housing needs.
This process will run through January 2023, and community engagement is a key component of the process. The City and its consultant, EMC, have created the Housing Element 2023-2031 Update webpage to engage the community by providing important information, updates, opportunities for input, and more. Partnership to Launch Nation's First Autonomous EV Technician Pathway Program in Cupertino
A new partnership in the City of Cupertino is introducing the nation's first Autonomous Electric Vehicle Technician Pathway Program.
On Thursday, December 3, Cupertino City Councilmembers and City employees joined De Anza College and Nuro, a local autonomous vehicle company, to announce this new partnership. |

Cupertino-based De Anza College is the only community college in the U.S. that offers a career pathway to prepare students with the skills needed for a promising career in autotech. This new partnership will serve as the blueprint for Nuro's Autonomous Upskilling Initiative—a program where the company will work with community colleges in their operating areas to create educational and training opportunities for workers looking to upskill.
The autonomous and electric vehicle industry is expected to grow tremendously in the coming years, thanks to technological advancements such as robotics and IoT, which will bring jobs to the local community. Programs such as the new Autonomous Electric Vehicle Technician Pathway Program, with a tuition-free option, provides local students an excellent opportunity to sharpen their skills, get valuable career training, as well as access to paid internships.
Pilot Program Kicks Off Holiday Shopping Season
Just in time for the start of the busy holiday shopping season, the City of Cupertino geared up for another big push to support local small businesses.
|
|
In addition to the Cupertino City Council proclaiming November 27 as Small Business Saturday, the City also created a Small Business Saturday webpage and developed #ShopCupertino and #CupertinoCares stickers for community members and businesses. |
On Tuesday, November 23, the City of Cupertino partnered with the Cupertino Library and the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce to host a Small Business Saturday kickoff event for the community. The Cupertino Library's electric vehicle, Go-Go-Biblio, was parked at the Main Street Shopping Center and representatives from partner organizations met with local businesses and greeted visitors who stopped by.
The goal was to empower local businesses, connect with the community, and attract more visitors to the shopping center. Community members were able to learn more about the benefits of supporting small businesses, pick up #CupertinoCares stickers, open a new library card, check out books, and learn more about I Love Cupertino promotions in addition to the City's Climate Action Plan—all while shopping and dining locally at Main Street.
This was a well-received pilot supporting local businesses that are a fundamental part of the distinctive character of our community. City employees found there is a strong desire to continue this type of partnership to visit other local shopping centers in Cupertino.
City Data Disaster Recovery Location Tested
The City of Cupertino's Infrastructure Division has successfully tested the City's Disaster Recovery Environment that is housed in Phoenix, Arizona.
The City has a duplicate copy of its computer data and core network services housed within a highly secure data center. This backup location in Phoenix ensures that if a disaster were to happen in Cupertino, the City's information will remain accessible and safe.
On December 2, Infrastructure Manager Benny Hsieh and Technician Toan Quach traveled to Phoenix to perform a test of the City's disaster recovery failover capabilities, which included a recovery test instance of the ERP Financial System.
With natural and increasing person-made disasters such as earthquakes and cyberattacks, it is paramount to have such an environment in place that is located geographically away from the City and any potential local impacts.

With local cafes and the library closed, this space allowed teens an exclusive, quiet space to study and finish homework before the end of their semester.
Snacks and coffee were donated by Local Kitchens, while FLEX College Prep provided complimentary tutors in AP Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Calculus, and English. Mobile recreation activities were also made available for teens to take study breaks and decompress.
