Provide Input on the Junipero Serra Trail Project
The City of Cupertino is inviting community members to attend, learn, and provide input on the Junipero Serra Trail (JST) design. The City has organized three meetings to discuss the conceptual design of the trail facility, which will run parallel to the existing Junipero Serra Channel, from De Anza Boulevard to Vallco Parkway.
The JST is one of the trail segments that would make up "The Loop" to, upon completion, provide an off-street bicycle and pedestrian facility that connects the Don Burnett Bicycle-Pedestrian Bridge and Vallco Parkway. During the Fiscal Year 2019-2020, the City Council authorized $895,000 to complete a scope of work that included design and engineering services performed by BKF Engineers on the central and east segments only. JST is an Apple-funded project that will receive a total of $1.8 million. The project was also submitted to VTA for a competitive Measure B grant and was selected to receive up to $6 million. The west segment is anticipated to be designed last and will be discussed at a future time.
The upcoming meetings will allow City staff to receive input, discuss the conceptual design of the trail, and go over the next steps. Conceptual designs are intended to be very general and community input is necessary prior to the design becoming specific. Running parallel to the existing Junipero Serra Channel, the limits of the trail will ultimately be from the west side of Mary Avenue to Vallco Parkway, as shown below.
Each session will be focused on a specific attendance group, although all three meetings will be open to the public:
- Thursday, May 13: residents in proximity to the east segment (Wolfe Road to Vallco Parkway)
- Thursday, May 20: residents in proximity to the central segment (De Anza Boulevard to Wolfe Road)
- Thursday, May 27: citywide
All meetings will be held virtually between 6 and 8 p.m. Questions, thoughts, and visuals can be submitted before the meetings by emailing jstproject@cupertino.org.

Cupertino Community Garden Reopens
The City of Cupertino is proud to announce the reopening of the Cupertino Community Garden with garden beds available for residents to rent.
“The Community Garden is one of the many excellent services the City offers our residents,” said Mayor Darcy Paul. “It’s an amenity in Cupertino that promotes healthy living through organic food, low-impact exercise, and social interactions. This nature-focused gathering place strengthens our community bonds and we’re very happy to see it reopening.”
The original garden was constructed in the 1970s and was in desperate need of a makeover. The Cupertino City Council agreed and approved $1.3 million in “seed” funding to completely remake the garden.
The new garden features 93 raised garden beds, six in-ground beds, and eight ADA-compliant beds. All are six by 16 feet.
“The garden is a beautiful, safe, and peaceful refuge for Cupertino residents amidst the fast-paced lives many of us lead,” said Carol Stanek, Chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission. “The organic garden is not just a benefit for the environment, it’s also a benefit for the community.”
Cupertino residents can apply for a garden bed through the Parks and Recreation Department.

Recruiting High School Student Representatives for Safe Routes to School
The City of Cupertino is currently recruiting student volunteers who would like to represent their high school on the Safe Routes to School Working Group during the 2021-22 school year.
Cupertino Safe Routes to School strives to create a safer environment for Cupertino students and families to travel to and from school actively. Selected students will attend monthly working group meetings usually held the second Wednesday of the month at 4 p.m. and will share their ideas and experience around education, encouragement, and engineering elements to improve access for safe walking and biking for students.
Student representatives will be selected based on their passion for any of the following: walking, bicycling, or scootering to school; healthy lifestyles; safe transportation; or campus safety. If you'd like to apply, send your completed application by Saturday, June 5 to SafeRoutes@Cupertino.org.
