May is National Bike Month!
May is National Bike Month. May 21 is the Bay Area's Bike to Wherever Day (BTWD) - a region-wide event organized by the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) to help you celebrate the simple joy of riding your bike! SVBC will keep you going with programs, classes, and goodies all Bike Month long. For example:
Enjoy a broad selection of short bicycle films from around the globe and many cultures at the virtual Silicon Valley Bicycle Film Festival from May 7 to 16.
On BTWD (May 21) and the following weekend, SVBC is sponsoring Energizer Stations and pop-ups across the region where you can pick up an official BTWD bag for FREE if you sign up to Pledge to Ride. BTWD T-shirts are also available at some locations for folks who make a donation of $35 or more. Find an Energizer Stations near you and throughout the region on this webpage.
SVBC is hosting a series of monthly bike classes and biketivist forums to help you become a more savvy cyclist and bicycle advocate.
To end the month of fun with a bang, SVBC is hosting their yearly Bike Bash - a fun, social, virtual event to celebrate our community on June 4, 7-8pm.
With so much going on, there's something to help everyone celebrate Bike Month!

Survey Results
The Role of Enforcement in SR2S
Cupertino Safe Routes to School (SR2S) recently completed a community outreach effort to better understand how our community feels about the role of enforcement within our current Safe Routes to School framework. This effort was in response to the National Safe Routes to School Partnership recommending Safe Routes programs across the country decouple themselves from police involvement.
We conducted this community outreach to inform any change in direction we might take our program. It turns out the overwhelming majority of survey participants believe Enforcement should remain an important part of SR2S. Click here to review the survey results.
With these results in, we intend to continue to partner with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department in all the ways we historically have. We and the community value their work and their partnership!

Bollinger Road Corridor Study: May 19, 5 p.m.
The City of Cupertino and the City of San Jose are continuing to collaborate on a corridor safety study of Bollinger Road between De Anza Blvd and Lawrence Expressway. The project team has solicited an initial round of feedback from the community and collected existing data about the corridor in order to identify improvement opportunities. Data includes 5-year collision records, existing traffic signal timings, and pre-COVID traffic volumes. The project team has developed conceptual exhibits for recommended corridor improvements utilizing the data and feedback collected in the first round of public outreach.
On May 19 at 5 p.m. the team will present the conceptual plans to the public at a virtual neighborhood meeting and the community will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the concepts at the meeting and online through May 28, 2021. This feedback will be used to finalize the conceptual plans.
Learn more about the Bollinger Road Corridor Safety Study, preview the alternative designs, share your feedback on the designs, and join the virtual meeting at: http://www.engagekh.com/bollingerroad
Junipero Serra Trail: Three Upcoming Meetings
The Junipero Serra Trail will provide an off-street bicycle and pedestrian facility that runs parallel to the existing Junipero Serra Channel and Calabazas Creek and provide a connection between the Don Burnett Bicycle-Pedestrian Bridge and Vallco Parkway.
The project will be constructed in three segments: East, Central and West. The eastern segment begins at the trailhead on Vallco Parkway and extends to the east side of Wolfe Road. The Central section is located between Wolfe Road and De Anza Boulevard and will include an undercrossing at Wolfe Road. The West segment begins at the west side of De Anza Boulevard and extends to the Don Burnett Bicycle Pedestrian Bridge at Mary Avenue.
BKF Engineering has been retained to provide a conceptual design for the East and Central segments, which will be partially funded through the Measure B Bicycle & Pedestrian Capital Projects Competitive Grant Program administered by Valley Transportation Authority.
Juniper Serra Trail Community Meeting Schedule
The City has scheduled three meetings to discuss the conceptual design of the East and Central trail facility. Each session has a specific attendance group. The first will focus on obtaining input from residents in proximity to the east segment. The second meeting will focus on obtaining input from residents in proximity to the central segment, and the third is citywide. Although each session has a targeted attendance group, they are all open to the public. If you would like to submit questions or visuals before the community meetings, you may do so at jstproject@cupertino.org.

Learning How to Ride a Bike
We encourage all community members to learn bike handling skills by traveling to a park or place where no vehicles are present. The best way to improve your bicycle handling skills is by practicing!
|
Common Sense
Regardless if you're a cyclist, motorist, or pedestrian, the best way to stay safe while traveling on the road is to exercise common sense. Obey all traffic laws and be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert, and do not become distracted by your phone.
|
Always Ride Predictably
To protect yourself and the safety of other roadway users, please ride safely and predictably. Do not weave in and out of the bike lane and always signal when preparing to exit the bike lane.

Upcoming Middle School Bike Skills Classes
Registration is now open, and classes are filling fast for Cupertino’s annual Middle School Bike Skills summer workshop series. These socially-distanced bike skills workshops teach middle schoolers and an accompanying parent or guardian how to ride safely to school and beyond. Participants will learn how to become confident riders by learning the rules of the road, practicing bike handling skills, and putting it all into practice during a group neighborhood ride.
If you know any students who will be in middle school this fall, please encourage them to register!

Separated Bike Lanes for Lawson Middle School
As part of the School Walk Audit safety improvements that the City is implementing around schools in Cupertino, the Transportation Division has designed a two-way separated bike lane along the frontage of Lawson Middle School. This design was inspired by similar bike lanes in front of Greene Middle School in Palo Alto. It's intended to help students ride to the bike cages on campus without needing to ride across the street in front of approaching cars in the middle of the block.
The next step for this project is to get approval from City Council to remove on-street parking along the school frontage. Click the image below to view the full design.
The School Walk Audit project is being funded by a gift to the City from Apple, Inc.

Rainbow Stripe Near Cupertino High School
The Public Works Department recently installed a rainbow stripe across Stevens Creek Blvd at Finch Ave, next to the new crosswalk on the east side of the intersection. The pavement stripe is 12 inches wide, contains the colors of the rainbow, and is easily visible to pedestrians crossing at the intersection. The stripe is made of a thermoplastic material similar to crosswalks and is melted onto the pavement in order to withstand the wear caused by high traffic volumes on Stevens Creek Blvd.

McClellan Phase III
Kimley-Horn has begun designing Phase III of the McClellan Road Separated Bikeways project. The result will be a redesigned intersection at De Anza Boulevard & McClellan Road, to close a gap between the recently-constructed separated bike lanes along McClellan Road and Pacifica Drive. Improvements will make it easier for cyclists to travel through the corridor.
We are looking forward to Kimley-Horn completing the design around December 2021. The City expects to bid the project for construction in 2022.

Bubb Road Separated Bikeways
Construction on Bubb Road has begun! The City is installing separated bikeways along Bubb Road between Results Way and Stevens Creek Boulevard. The design incorporates an innovative shuttle stop in the middle of the street that also serves as a refuge island for pedestrians crossing the street at a mid-block crosswalk.
We expect construction to wrap up in July. This project is paid for by a generous gift to the City of Cupertino from Apple, Inc.

Via Community Shuttle Update
On June 15, City Council will hear an update on the Via Community Shuttle pilot program, discuss when to resume service over the summer, and update the contract to extend the pilot for the period of time the service was paused due to COVID-19.
Via is an on-demand shuttle service which provides transportation to people 14 years of age and older to anywhere in Cupertino and to Sunnyvale Caltrain. On-demand means no schedules or routes to remember. Instead, a van travels to you and takes you to your destination. Riders walk a short distance to meet the van to make trips direct and fast. For more information about the service, visit: Cupertino Via Shuttle
