Stan Alert: There’s a Recycling Monster in Town
Drumroll please—your newest neighbor will be arriving soon! Did we tell you that he loves recycling? Meet Stan, our friendly neighborhood monster-mascot here to teach you how to sort your recyclables in the funnest way possible.
Stan is known to hide near trash bins in Culver City. He’s normally hard to spot, but by scanning the special QR code, you can find him quite easily! Stan will appear in augmented reality, ready to guide you with what can be recycled (and what really, really can’t).
So keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready—Stan’s waiting to help you become a recycling hero, one piece of trash at a time.

Updates on Proposed Restrictions
Recently, the City received several recommendations from its Sustainability Sub-Committee for potential product restrictions. The proposed restrictions would be placed on several items found commonly during clean-ups of Ballona Creek. These items include single-use plastics bags and bottles; astroturf; balloons; and cigarette butts.
The proposed restrictions will be brought before the City Council on May 27th. Please come share your opinions with the Council.

Consume Less, Enjoy More
Before you click “add to cart,” ask yourself: do I really need this, or can I reduce, reuse, or rethink instead? This Earth Day, let’s honor the planet by giving it (and ourselves) a little breathing room.
Instead of buying, do this:
- Borrow items
- Fix what you already have
- Swap with neighbors
- Buy used rather than new
Decide that maybe - just maybe - you don’t need that fifth set of measuring spoons after all.

You Can "Doo" It!
Picking up after your pet is both common sense and common courtesy. No one likes poop in their yards, at the park, on the sidewalk or the bottom of their shoes.
Pet waste is also a big source of stormwater pollution! Water from rain, car washes, and sprinklers carry all the harmful bacteria into our local creeks and waterways. So make sure to scoop the poop. "Doo" it for your neighbors, for a cleaner Culver City, and to protect our water.

Wipes Can Clog Pipes
We know that the business of taking care of one’s business is important. If possible, refrain from flushing wet wipes. Just throw them in the trash. They can clog pipes - even the ones that are labeled flushable. Stick to the three P’s when it comes to flushing: Pee, Poop, and (toilet) Paper!
That means no medicine, plastics, food grease, trash, feminine hygiene products, or wipes!

What’s the most unusual or interesting item on your desk right now? A container of chocolate snacks on my computer tower that moved by itself when I was in a meeting with someone. The wires behind moved too and we were so scared we left!
What’s your favorite part of your job? I really enjoy my job. I love what I do. I enjoy working with everyone in the city and my environment is great. I have a great boss and great colleagues; I couldn’t ask for anything better.
If you could time travel to any era, where would you go and why? I would go between the 1930s and 40s to see where my family is from in India and Burma and meet my great grandparents and grandparents and see how they lived.

What’s the most unusual or interesting item on your desk right now? I have a collection of “The Little Prince” books in different languages/versions, around 17 total. When I told one of my coworkers about it, she found a miniature Spanish version in Peru and brought it back for me. I keep it next to my computer at work!
What’s your favorite part of your job? Working on policy/budget/programs that affect people’s daily lives, ideally for the better! Public Works is so important and when it’s functioning well, no one notices. I enjoy trying to keep Culver City moving forward in sustainability while still maintaining a high-level customer service to our residents, businesses, and community members. Many people who have submitted questions through our website have been pleasantly surprised when I respond and that always makes me smile.
If you could time travel to any era, where would you go and why? France in mid 1700s because I am very intrigued by the Rococo fashion. I need to know the logistics of how the court was able to dance and move around in those wigs in such structured dresses with large skirts and heels! I also need to know if Marie Antoinette really said, “Let them eat cake”.
