Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated by Congress as a National Day of Service. The holiday not only honors the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but also encourages all to volunteer to improve their communities.
We encourage you to join the Culver City Parks, Recreation & Community Services (PRCS) Department in celebrating the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a weekend of service projects and performances.
On Saturday, January 20th, events will take place at the Veterans Memorial Complex between 9 AM and 12:30 PM. The day will begin with a service project at the Teen Center where volunteers will help build care packages for Exodus Recovery and Project Homekey from 9 AM to 10 AM. Starting at 10 AM, service project volunteers and community members are invited to enjoy a pancake breakfast, resource fair and a program of performances, including Gerald Rivers. Registration required for all events. Online pre-registration is available for Saturday events.
On Sunday, January 21st, a service project at Fox Hills Park will take place from 8 AM to noon. The service project will include trash clean up and bench sanding. Supplies will be provided, and snacks and water will be available for volunteers. Parking is limited, so please carpool if possible. Volunteers will register on site at the Fox Hills Parkette, and anyone under 18 years old must have a parent with them to sign the waiver. Remember, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve … You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”
