Finding Meaning in the Maze
Join us for our 2nd installment of the Culver City virtual teach-in series, Individual, Institutional, and Structural Racism: Finding Meaning in the Maze, on Friday, July 24th from 5 PM to 7 PM.
Our society is in the midst of a sweeping movement for social and structural change. It can feel overwhelming and confusing trying to understand terms like "equity", "defunding", "white privilege", and "anti-blackness", and what they mean for us locally. Together, we will talk about and unpack these and other terms followed by a thoughtful community dialogue.
These ongoing series of teach-ins and conversations around individual, institutional, and structural racism aim to meet the urgency of the moment by listening to community voices and recognizing how racism shows up in interpersonal interactions, institutions, and cultural, historical, and ideological structures. City Council Equity Subcommittee Members Daniel Lee and Meghan Sahli-Wells will be joined by speakers Cicely Bingener and Dr. Shelly Tochluk on this teach-in.

About the Speakers
Cicely Bingener, M.Ed. is a 5th generation Los Angeles native, veteran public school teacher, and current UCLA Ph.D. student. She has resided in Culver City for 12 years with husband, Mark, and their 4 children, who attend El Marino Language School, Culver City Middle School, and Culver City High School. She is an active school and community volunteer and currently serves on the General Plan Advisory Committee for the City of Culver City. She plans to live out the rest of her days in our beloved Culver City!
Shelly Tochluk earned a B.A. in Psychology at UCLA, an M.A. in Counseling Psychology at Loyola Marymount University, and a PhD in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute. While completing her degrees she also earned her teaching credential and taught elementary and middle school in Inglewood Unified School District. She is the author of "Witnessing Whiteness: The Need to Talk About Race and How to Do It and Living in the Tension: The Quest for a Spiritualized Racial Justice". Shelly volunteers with AWARE-LA (Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere-Los Angeles) and co-produces its 4-day summer institute titled, Unmasking Whiteness, which leads white people into a deeper understanding of their personal relationship to race, white privilege, and systemic racism.
