Alexander Hughes Center Temporary Closure
This past week, the Alexander Hughes Community Center was temporarily closed for emergency system repairs. Due to the extent of the repairs, the closure of the Alexander Hughes Center will be extended for an additional week, tentatively through Saturday, May 2.
Staff are working closely with contractors, class instructors, and facility renters to relocate classes and meetings to alternative facilities whenever possible to minimize cancellations. For more information or questions, please call (909) 399-5490.
Emergency Rental Assistance Referrals - SGV Home
The San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG) is now accepting referrals to its SGV Home Program for renters in need of emergency rental assistance. Eligible households include low-, very low-, or extremely low-income households who have experienced a qualifying emergency within the past 12 months, such as an eviction lawsuit, loss of income, medical emergency, or threat of displacement or housing instability.
After a referral is submitted, eligibility will be determined by the SGVCOG or its service providers. City staff’s role is limited to submitting referrals and does not include determining eligibility or administering the program. Please note that eligibility and referral to the program do not guarantee the provision of financial assistance.
Once a tenant is referred, a service provider will be assigned to work with eligible households to identify appropriate financial assistance and case management needs. Services may include referrals to legal assistance, employment resources, and other supportive services. For more information, including how to request a referral, please visit the City’s tenant assistance webpage via the link below.
Polling for Local Sales Tax Measure
During its regular meeting on March 10, 2026, the City Council voted to engage Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates (FM3 Research) to conduct a 20-minute dual-mode survey to gauge voter interest in a potential local sales tax ballot measure for the November 2026 General Election.
The survey is being administered to a random sample of up to 400 registered voters in the City of Claremont who are likely to participate in the November 2026 election. Survey materials are available in both English and Spanish and will be conducted online (email) and by telephone (text message and phone call).
FM3 Research is expected to present its findings and recommendations to the City Council in May. For questions or additional information, please contact Deputy City Manager Katie Wand by phone at 909-399-5454 or email at KWand@claremontca.gov.
Pooch Park Temporary Closure
The Pooch Park will be temporarily closed from Wednesday, April 1 to Friday, May 1, 2026, for biannual turf maintenance and resting period.
This yearly scheduled maintenance is to ensure the turf remains healthy. This City's landscape contractor will aerate the turf, flush dog urine, remove invasive weeds, and allow the turf to rest. These routine maintenance activities allow for the turf to remain healthy and vibrant during the warmer months.
During the closure, residents may visit other Claremont parks that are pet friendly, which include the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, Thompson Creek Trail, and Rancho San Jose Park. Residents may also visit pooch parks in adjacent cities, such as San Dimas, Upland, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga.
For more information, contact Community Services at (909) 399-5431.
Street Improvements - Mills Avenue
On Monday, April 20, 2026, the City’s contractor, We R Builders, began installing street improvements along Mills Avenue between Moreno Street and Arrow Highway. Work includes:
- removal of existing asphalt
- the construction of a raised intersection with colored stamped pavement
- roadway striping
- ladder-style crosswalks and green bike lanes
- signage installations
- the construction of ADA-accessible ramps
Construction is expected to last approximately four (4) weeks. To accommodate this work, Mills Avenue will be closed 24 hours a day between Moreno Street and Oakdale Drive for two (2) weeks, from Monday, April 20 through Friday, May 1. The roadway will reopen on Saturdays and Sundays.
Residents will be able to access their homes and driveways along Mills Avenue in coordination with the contractor during the full closure; however, there may be times when driveways are temporarily inaccessible. Street parking will be available along Cucamonga Avenue (between Mills Avenue and Sycamore Avenue) and Oakdale Drive (between Mills Avenue and Arrow Highway). Overnight parking restrictions on these streets will be suspended during the closure period.
For questions during construction, please contact the Engineering Division at (909) 399-5465.
Claremont Hills Wilderness Park - Intermittent Trail Closures
New vault restroom facilities will be installed at the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. During construction, portions of the Cobal and Burbank trails may be temporarily closed to ensure the safe operation of heavy equipment and construction crews. Closures will occur at trail junctions, and alternative routes will remain available. Closure areas will be clearly marked with signage and will only remain closed while work is actively underway.
We kindly ask all visitors to respect posted closures for their safety and to allow crews to complete this important park improvement. Violation of posted trail closure may result in citation or arrest. CMC 11.10.050(C)

The Claremont Senior Program is excited to partner with the Claremont Colleges to introduce the new and improved CALL program (Claremont Avenues for Lifelong Learning). The program will return this fall with fresh opportunities to learn, explore, and engage by auditing college-level courses at the Claremont Colleges. Registering for the CALL program is a multi-step process which requires interested parties to follow various steps in a timely fashion. Please review the process below:
Step 1: Sign Up for the Interest List
- You can register in-person at the Joslyn Center or online through the City’s website.
- All who register will be entered into a lottery; however, selection into the program will be done by random lottery and is not guaranteed.
- Registration for the interest list must be completed by June 8.
- A list of classes will be sent to all individuals registered for the interest list 1-2 weeks prior to the lottery.
Step 2: Lottery
- All individuals on the interest list will be entered into a random lottery to determine their registration date & time.
- Claremont residents will be given priority in registration.
- Please note that registering earlier does not increase your chances of being selected for an earlier lottery time.
Step 3: Register for Classes
- Individuals will receive detailed instructions via email from the Claremont Colleges on how to choose your courses once they are released.
- All class registration will be completed online, making it easy and convenient to secure your spot.
- There is no guarantee that your preferred class will be available at your registration time, as the lottery is randomized and some classes may be full.
- If the number of individuals on the interest list exceeds the amount of course spaces available, it is possible there will not be enough space to accommodate all individuals interested in the program.
Requirements
- It is vital that interested participants have regular access to a computer, internet access, working email, and feel comfortable using technology for both registration and to be successful in courses.
Don’t miss this exciting chance to step back into the classroom, discover new interests, and be part of a vibrant academic community!
