Cal Fire Releases Updated Fire Hazard Maps
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps for Local Responsibility Areas (LRA) throughout the state, which includes the City of Claremont. As required by the State Fire Marshal, the updated maps identify areas based on the severity of fire hazards, with zones categorized as moderate, high, and very high risk. In Claremont, L.A. County Fire is responsible for providing fire services. Within 120 days of official notice from Cal Fire, the City must adopt the maps as presented or with alterations. If the City wants to alter the maps, the fire zones may only be increased and not decreased in severity.

2025 Reforestation Program - Last Call for Trees
The Community Services Department will complete the 2025 Reforestation Program in mid-April. Those sites where a tree had been removed in the past year automatically received a letter offering a replacement tree. If you are interested in a new tree and have not had a tree removed over the past year, please contact the Community Services Department. Staff will evaluate the proposed site to be sure it is a viable planting site. Factors considered when determining a viable site include adequate grow space, any interference with utility lines, sufficient site distance and traffic clearance, as well as maintenance resources, including an adequate and consistent water source. New trees will be planted between May and June 2025.
To request a new street tree, please email trees@claremontca.gov to have your name placed on the 2025 reforestation list. Residents will be notified by mail if their property has a viable planting site.
Deadline for tree planting requests is Thursday, April 10, 2025 at 5pm.
Pooch Park Temporary Closure in April
The Pooch Park is temporarily closed until Thursday, May 1 for biannual turf maintenance and resting period. This yearly scheduled maintenance is to ensure the turf remains healthy.
The City’s landscape contractor will remove weed grasses and aerate the turf. Aeration is the process of coring holes into the turf so oxygen, water, and nutrients can penetrate the soil. It also breaks up soil that has become compacted and hardened due to heavy use. These routine maintenance activities allow for the turf to remain healthy and vibrant during the warmer months.
During the closure, residents may visit other Claremont parks that are pet friendly, which include the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, Thompson Creek Trail, and Rancho San Jose Park. Residents may also visit pooch parks in adjacent cities, such as San Dimas, Upland, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga.
