Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.

How to Register
In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.

On-line registration
To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

MAGIC WORKSHOP
Kids will have fun learning magic tricks from Magician Wayne Kawamoto. Magic for children is a great way to increase hand-eye coordination and also boosts self-esteem. The workshop is limited to 30 participants. The fee is $5 per child. No refunds will be given.

TAKE STOCK IN THE MARKET
In this free 50-minute seminar, instructor Tho N. Ngo will explore the stock market in uncomplicated terms. Investors will discover more about the basic structure of the stock market and how it works. Ngo will also explain three key principles that can help participants become more successful at investing in stocks. The workshop is limited to 27.

ART INNOVATORS
Students will use metallic markers and sheet music paper to experience the many aspects of music through art.

In honor of Black History Month, students will draw a portrait of a woman in traditional wear using art markers and charcoal while focusing on light and shade.

PICASA PHOTO WORKSHOP
Learn how to use the free Picasa software to transfer digital photographs from your camera to a computer. During this free hands-on workshop, instructor Jason Galeener will show participants how to improve pictures, organize them into folders, create slideshows, print and upload photographs to the Internet. Space is limited to 27 participants.

SCIENCE OF OPTICAL ILLUSIONS
In this Art in Science workshop, students will learn about optical illusions and what causes them and try their hand at creating their own. Space is limited to 20 participants.

12 CHINESE ZODIAC SIGNS
Find out what animal you are! In this entertaining workshop, Master Jenny Liu will tell the story of how the 12 Chinese zodiac signs came to be and how this Eastern astrology is used today. She explores why it can be helpful to understand the characteristics of the 12 zodiac animals. Special souvenir Chinese New Year zodiac pages will be prepared for the children. Space is limited to 50 participants.

CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY
Chinese calligraphy is the traditional art of Chinese writing that originated more than 5,000 years ago. It is especially significant and important during numerous Chinese festivals and celebrations. This workshop is a superb opportunity for students to learn how to write a different language and learn about the history of Chinese calligraphy in a fun and creative way. Students will learn to write 24 Chinese characters and how to write birthdays and anniversary days. Students will bring home their prized work. This class is limited to 30 participants. The fee is $5 per child. No refunds will be given.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS/FAITH RINGGOLD
Children can learn the finer points of art in this series of workshops presented by Young Rembrandts. After studying several paintings of African-American artist Faith Ringgold, best known for her painted story quilts, students will create artwork in her style using colored pencils. Seating is limited to 20. The fee is $5 per child. No refunds will be given.

SAT PREP/WRITING
In this workshop presented by Adam D. Richardson, learn tips and strategies to score well on the Writing Section of the SAT. Discover how to deconstruct the prompt and manage time to prepare a well-written essay and become familiar with common grammar mistakes to avoid.

Magician Ian Galloway has performed at venues such as the Magic Castle in Hollywood and has worked at the magic shop in Disneyland. FRIDAY EVENING MOVIE
On Friday, January 16, the film "Maleficent" (2014) will be screened in the Skyline Room. The movie stars Angelina Jolie as the title character who, as a teenager, was a powerful and respected winged fairy helping to rule a magical land. Her homeland borders a country that is populated by humans and run by the cruel King Henry. One day, Henry's son Stefan ventures into the fairy's land and meets Maleficent, resulting in the two teens falling in love. A year later, Henry seeks to take over the magical land next to his kingdom, but is thwarted in battle by Maleficent. He demands revenge, and eventually his now-grown son Stefan succeeds by betraying the fairy and clipping her wings. In response, an infuriated Maleficent swears revenge on Stefan. She gets her chance when the prince becomes king and has his first child, a daughter named Aurora. "Maleficent" is rated PG and has a running time of 97 minutes. MYSTERY ON THE MENU
The Friends of the Cerritos Library will host the 11th Mystery on the Menu luncheon with 15 award-winning authors on Saturday, January 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The authors participating in panel discussions and book signings are Brett Battles, Kate Carlisle, Anne Cleeland, Margaret Coel, Larry Collins, Lorna Collins, Chuck Greaves, Tim Hallinan, Tammy Kaehler, Chris Lynch, James Preston, Robert Rotstein, Pamela Samuels-Young, Diane Vallere and Simon Wood. NEW LANGUAGE STUDY DATABASE OFFERED
The Cerritos Library now offers the Mango Languages online language-learning system. Mango is free for all library patrons and can be accessed through the Research Databases tab on the library's website at http://menu.ci.cerritos.ca.us/. Each lesson combines real-life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application by focusing on the four key elements of language learning: vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and culture. Mango offers access to 60 foreign languages and 17 English courses. Mango also offers the opportunity to learn through foreign film with Mango Premiere and access to a variety of specialty mini courses such as Pirate, Medical Spanish and romance courses. Mango can be accessed at the library, remotely or on-the-go with apps for iPhone, Android, Kindle and Nook.

11TH ANNUAL ORCHID SHOW
The popular Orchid Show will be held on Friday, February 27, Saturday, February 28 and Sunday, March 1. We are looking forward to displaying a large variety of plants once again. Library Displays

JAPANESE NINGYO
This colorful display in the Library's lobby and the Local History Museum focuses on three categories of dolls, including ichimatsu ningyo (depicting young Japanese children), musha ningyo (depicting heroic warriors) and isho ningyo (depicting folk culture). The dolls were purchased from temple sales around Kyoto by Noelle Spychala. The display will run until the end of January.
