Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.

How to Register
In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.

On-line registration
To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at www.cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

DRAWING FOR KIDS
Participants will learn basic art or drawing techniques in this hour-long, hands-on class limited to 24 participants.

BEGINNING ORIGAMI FOR KIDS
Volunteen Alexa Marie Flores will teach children how to create an animal using basic origami paper folding techniques during this one-hour class. Participants will learn how to make a whale at the May class and a dragonfly at the June class. Each class is limited to 24 participants.

JAPANESE KOINOBORI WORKSHOP
In honor of Japanese Children’s Day, which is celebrated on May 5, children are invited to a Koinobori-making workshop where they will learn to create koi-shaped wind socks. Families in Japan fly these windsocks outside their homes to symbolize courage and strength. This workshop is part of the Library’s Cultural Art Workshop Series and is limited to 20 participants.

MICROSOFT WORD TIPS & TRICKS
In this three-hour Microsoft Word 2007 class, instructor Jason Galeener will teach participants how to create professional looking documents. Participants will learn how to use Microsoft Word to change the default font, edit paragraph spacing, create page borders to add professional touches, insert digital photographs and images, and more. This hands-on workshop is limited to 27 participants familiar with a computer keyboard and basic word processing.

DAVE BOATMAN’S CARTOON CLASS
This class provides an educational, creative and interactive hour of cartoon instruction. Dave Boatman will teach participants how cartoons are used in our society, present warm-up and imagination exercises, provide drawing tips and demonstrate how to draw various cartoon facial expressions. This class is meant to inspire and motivate students in their love of cartoons and drawing and is limited to 50 participants.

CREATIVE WRITING FOR KIDS
At this creative writing workshop, participants will learn about various aspects of writing, including character, plot and setting. The workshop is limited to 27 participants.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS
Children can learn the finer points of art in this series of workshops presented by Young Rembrandts. Students will use colored pencils to create a desert perspective drawing. Seating is limited to 20. The fee is $5. No refunds will be given.

MEET AUTHOR CHARLOTTE HARRIS REES
On Thursday, May 3, author Charlotte Harris Rees will discuss her book “Chinese Sailed to America before Columbus: More Secrets from the Dr. Hendon M. Harris, Jr. Map Collection.” This well-researched book demonstrates pre-Columbian Asian contact with the Americas by sea. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event. NATIONAL FREE COMIC BOOK DAY
Free Comic Book Day is celebrated all over the United States on Saturday, May 5. Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the 20th century. They feature a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagination of the readers, and have survived the dominance of radio, the ubiquity of television, the spread of color and sound motion pictures, the rise of videogames and the Internet. Free comic books will be given away to children and teens at the Children’s Help Desk and at the Information Desk in the Young Adult area throughout the day on May 5 while supplies last. SUNDAY MOVIE MATINEE
On Sunday, May 6, the film “The Adventures of Tintin” (2011) will be screened in the Skyline Room. Tintin is an intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into an adventure and conflict against the nefarious Red Rockham. Please join us as Swazzle presents “Dream Carver,” a 45-minute musical puppet show presented in English and Spanish. MUSIC BY PARTNERS IN CHIME
Partners in Chime will present a program of classical music and musical theater tunes on Wednesday, May 16. The 24-member group is from the Life Skills Education Advancement Program in the School of Continuing Education of the North Orange County Community College District. Under the directorship of Lee Lassetter, the musicians will play hand chimes, which are similar to handbells and have a mellow and calm timbre.

PORTABLE PLANETARIUM
Come enjoy the universe inside the Library! Two planetarium shows will be presented to children ages 5-12 by Full Spectrum Educational Services. Children can gaze at the night sky, constellations and galaxies inside an inflatable planetarium. An arts and crafts project related to the solar system will also be offered. Space is limited to 40 participants per show. This program is presented by the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland; the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and the American Library Association in Chicago. Funding for the show is provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

BLOOD DRIVE
Due to a critically low local blood supply and severe shortages of blood collections across the nation, the City of Cerritos and the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Thursday, May 24 in the parking lot of the Cerritos Library from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. All blood drive participants will receive two complimentary VIP tickets to the Laugh Factory and two tickets for an LA Galaxy soccer game (there is a $7.50 processing fee for each LA Galaxy ticket). Participants may also enter a regional “Get Fit for Summer” drawing. Healthy persons age 17 or older and weighing at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate blood. Library Displays

MOSAICS BY DAWN MENDELSON
Several unusual and colorful mosaic pieces by Dawn Mendelson will be on display in the Library’s Lobby area until the end of June. Mendelson specializes in pique assiette (“stolen plate,”) using primarily broken and discarded china. The palette of this style is vast, including not just colors but patterns, textures and images from history. Mendelson has been studying and making mosaics for more than 11 years, and also creates large-scale murals.

Water-themed oil paintings by Soonbae Lee will be displayed in the Local History Museum until the end of June.

VISIONS OF THE UNIVERSE: FOUR CENTURIES OF DISCOVERY
Starting on Wednesday, May 16, a special traveling exhibit will be offered in the Craftsman area of the Library. Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery covers a wide range of topics related to the scientific exploration of the universe, including storms on the sun, features on the surface of Mars and the Moon, comets, star birth and distant galaxies. The display features historical drawings and diagrams made by Galileo and other early astronomers, along with dramatic contemporary images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and other space missions. The display shows how our views and understanding of the universe and the objects within it have changed over the centuries. The display is presented by the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland; the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and the American Library Association in Chicago. Funding for the show is provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The exhibit ends on July 20.
