Berkeley Today and Tomorrow: recognized for innovation and ready to lead

BT&T 2025

At Berkeley Today and Tomorrow on April 18, Berkeley Mayor Adena Ishii spotlighted the Berkeley Startup Cluster and City of Berkeley Office of Economic Development’s work to support local founders and grow the city’s innovation ecosystem. UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons underscored the university's role as the nation’s top public university for venture-backed startups and emphasized the urgency of cross-sector collaboration.

The fireside chat between the Mayor and Chancellor, moderated by Visit Berkeley CEO Jeffrey Church, reinforced a powerful message: Berkeley is built for innovation. From AI to climate tech, this is a pivotal moment, and Berkeley is ready to lead. (Both the Mayor and Chancellor are Berkeley Startup Cluster Advisors.)

The event was hosted by the Berkeley Chamber at the historic Berkeley City Club. Chamber CEO Beth Roessner and City Manager Paul Buddenhagen also offered opening remarks on how the city could further become a recognized hub for inclusive, tech-driven growth.

Berkeley & Emeryville Mayors relish feedback from local biotech industry leaders

biocom

On May 1, City of Berkeley Mayor Adena Ishii, City of Emeryville Mayor David Mourra and local biotech industry leaders had a candid discussion about how these two East Bay cities can enable biotech companies to thrive, even during difficult times. They touched on the importance of regional collaboration to address homelessness and housing, police force tools to reduce crime, pro-transit and bike-friendly policies and infrastructure, and cities investing in business networking events and marketing campaigns (like those of the Berkeley Startup Cluster and #DiscoveredinBerkeley campaign) to help business leaders make connections, find talent, and increase the visibility of the life science innovation taking place in the Berkeley-Emeryville corridor. Both also welcomed regular communication and feedback from business leaders, with Mayor Ishii extending an open door: "Invite me to visit!"

Thanks to life science industry association Biocom California for organizing and to Wareham Development for hosting.

Berkeley environmental innovators feature prominently during Earth Month

Berkeley had a strong showing during SF Climate Week 2025. Top players in climate across the University of California ecosystem banded together to host the UC Climate Tech Showcase at 111 Minna in San Francisco, which brought together 20+ innovative climate tech startups, 200 investors, industry experts, and government leaders. Attendees heard pitches from climate tech startups including Rhea's Factory, Levitree, FutureBio, and many more. Later in the week, Bakar Climate Labs and the Bakar Institute of Digital Materials for the Planet hosted a sold-out AI and Climate Symposium at Bakar Bio Labs in Berkeley that explored the transformative potential of AI to advance climate tech.

And the City of Berkeley issued a community message to residents and local business owners during Earth Week encouraging them to "Get certified as a green business or support one".

Deep Fission is raising $15 million to advance its revolutionary underground nuclear reactor design

deep fission

Deep Fission, a Berkeley innovator in clean energy technology, is raising up to $15 million to advance its revolutionary underground nuclear reactor design. Deep Fission’s approach, lowering small modular reactors a mile underground into a 30-inch borehole, could dramatically cut costs and improve safety by using the Earth’s natural pressure and bedrock for containment. This breakthrough could make zero-emissions nuclear energy more accessible and profitable with their first reactor targeted for 2029!
