BERKELEY STARTUP CLUSTER HIGHLIGHTS

It's Time to Renew Your Berkeley Business License

It’s time for annual business license renewals in Berkeley.

If your company used government or philanthropic R&D grants to support business operations in 2024, R&D grant tax waiver requests are due to the Office of Economic Development by January 31. [Note that the Berkeley Municipal Code was updated last month to exclude philanthropic and governmental research and development (R&D) grants in the public interest from annual gross receipts tax calculations, based on a Council item approved unanimously by Berkeley City Council in late 2024.]

For business license renewals, make sure to file and pay by March 1, 2025, to avoid late fees and penalties.

For assistance getting a new business license, download the guide from the City of Berkeley Business License webpage or listen to the Berkeley Chamber webinar on the topic. If you have any questions about the business license application or renewal process, please contact the City of Berkeley Business License office.

New Zoning Changes to to Keep Innovation in Berkeley

kiib

On Dec. 3, 2024, Berkeley City Council voted unanimously  to update the City's zoning rules to Keep Innovation in Berkeley. The new rules will make it possible for businesses to get over-the-counter zoning approvals for R&D uses under 20K square feet in key commercial corridors near campus and decrease the restrictions on where labs using Bio Safety Level-2 organisms can locate.

The new zoning rules will go into effect next Wednesday, January 29th. Learn about the different types of land-use permits, when you need them, and what it takes to obtain them or contact the City of Berkeley Planning Department with questions.

The ideal early target would be Netherton syndrome, a rare, inherited skin disorder that forms intensely painful, dry and scaly patches and kills some 20% of babies with the disease within the first year. He hopes to land a Series A funding round soon to help take the company into clinical trials.
