Congrats to Pivot Bio for being recognized by MIT Technology Review for developing a climate-friendly fertilizer. They are harnessing microbes to deliver a usable form of nitrogen directly to the roots of crops, reducing farmers' reliance on synthetic fertilizers and the corresponding environmental pollution.

Incubated at Bakar Labs, HOPO Therapeutics, Inc. announced a contract award valued at up to $226 million from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The initial award of approximately $9.4 million will fund toxicology and pharmacology studies, manufacturing activities, and nonclinical research to address heavy metal poisoning.

Kobold Metals, a Berkeley-headquartered minerals exploration startup using AI to unearth new deposits of lithium and copper, has raised $491 million of its targeted $527 million funding round.
KoBold is backed by billionaire heavyweights Bill Gates, Jack Ma and Jeff Bezos, as well as some giants in growth venture. Andreessen Horowitz and T. Rowe Price co-led its last round.

Deep Fission, led by father-daughter team, Richard and Elizabeth Muller, has raised $4 million in a pre-seed funding round to build a small nuclear reactor just 30 inches wide and lower it into a mile-deep drill shaft. The approach could sidestep the immense costs and safety concerns that have long plagued traditional nuclear power.
