Join neighbors for Berkeley’s Coastal Cleanup Day from 9am-12pm as part of a statewide effort to keep our waterways clean. Learn how your everyday actions can reduce trash pollution.
Join City staff, community groups, and volunteers from around Berkeley to help clean up trash and plastic pollution along various areas of the waterfront.
You might even win a prize for finding the most unusual item — last year’s winner was a jeweled belt.
Cleanup Day will take place along various waterways of the Berkeley Waterfront, Aquatic Park, and Brickyard Cove.
You can register individually or as a group online. In-person registration will also be available on the morning of the event. All participants must fill out a waiver; youth under 18 must have a waiver completed by their legal guardian.
Berkeley Coastal Cleanup Saturday, September 21 9:00 am-noon Register online by 5:00 pm Friday, September 20. You can also register in person by 10:00 am on cleanup day.
Choose where to start your day and receive a safety training:
- Shorebird Park Nature Center, 160 University Avenue
- Brickyard Cove, 598 University Avenue
Berkeley Coastal Cleanup Day is part of a statewide effort to restore and beautify local beaches, bays, and waterways. Join the effort to keep our City beautiful.
Bring your clean up supplies and track your findings to win a prize
Collect trash and data, learn about plastic pollution, and participate in educational displays and activities.
To help reduce plastic waste, please bring:
- a bucket or reusable bag
- a lightweight pair of gardening gloves
- a filled, reusable water bottle
If you are unable to bring your own gear, we’ll provide volunteers with buckets, bags, and gloves.
Return to the Shorebird Park staging area by noon, turn in your data card, and receive a raffle ticket. The raffle will take place after the “most unusual item” contest.
Volunteers will collect trash and log it with the Clean Swell App or data cards. This will help compile data for one of the largest research efforts in the world.
Limited parking is available at the South Cove East Lot at 160 University Avenue (circled in the map below). You can also bike using our bike boulevards, carpool, or use public transportation (AC Transit, bus 51B).
Call (510) 981-6720 or email questions to naturecenter@berkeleyca.gov.
One-day action, daily habits help clean the coast
As you help collect trash, you will get a better understanding of how pollution affects our coast and waterways.
Over the past three decades, over 1.8 million volunteers have removed over 27 million pounds of trash. In 2023, more than 45,762 volunteers picked up more than 376,308 pounds of trash from California beaches and waterways.
Each of us can make a difference every day by reducing waste. The top 10 trash items at cleanups are "single-use" items like cigarettes, food wrappers, and lid caps. To reduce flooding and keep waste out of our waterways, you can also adopt your neighborhood storm drain to clear it of debris before and after a storm.
This event is just one of a variety organized throughout the year by the City's Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department, which offers dozens of camps, classes, and other activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Get a glimpse of the Recreation Division's offerings through our online registration portal.
Unable to make the September 21 event? Join us any 3rd Saturday of the month at the Shorebird Park Nature Center or find other similar efforts on our event calendar.
Register yourself or a group and spread the word to others. Help use this Coastal Cleanup Day to protect our waterways.

Learn how to use the City’s emergency map to quickly see how neighborhoods, including your own, may be directed to evacuate, shelter in place, or take other protective action.
When possible, the City will also use the map to identify evacuation routes, road closures, shelters, or other critical information to guide you to your next step.
This dynamic map is used in real-time by Berkeley’s first responders—firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and other emergency personnel—to connect the public with the most immediate information available.
The map can be viewed at the address level and includes key landmarks, such as schools and parks. You can enter your address to quickly see the current emergency status for your home, work, school, or other important locations.
Know how to find information for locations you care about—no need to memorize specific zone numbers. Zone numbers may change to adapt to a rapidly evolving emergency.
Explore and learn how to use Berkeley’s Emergency Map tool before an emergency occurs, to be prepared when you need it most.

Bring your board and your crew and drop in at Berkeley’s skate park to spend the afternoon in a way that Terrence McCrary Jr. would have loved: surfing the concrete on four wheels.
Inspired by McCrary Jr., the late skateboard mentor for Berkeley youths known affectionately as “T-Mack” the skate jam will have open skating across the park’s 18,000 square feet of concrete, including a large oval bowl to carve, a fun box with ramps and rails, and areas for beginners.
There will also be a skate contest where participants can choose to compete on three skate park features: a big hip (a slanted ramp), a noping (a rounded concrete lip on a quarter pipe), and a ledge (a raised platform). Up to three skaters can win by performing the most complex tricks on each feature.
For more fun for everyone, we’ll have: barbecue; a raffle for skateboards, wheels, and more; DJed music; and a painting cardboard art area with prizes for best art that commemorates Terrance.
T-Mack Skate Jam Saturday, September 14, 2024 11:30 am - 3:00 pm Skate Park, 711 Harrison St Free event for all, no age requirements
