The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS), in partnership with the Academic Innovation Catalyst (AIC), have launched the CITRIS Innovation Fellowship program and the AIC Awards, aimed at transforming University of California research into viable commercial solutions to address society’s most pressing challenges. Three fellowships of up to $200,000 over two years are available. The awards must be used to translate laboratory research into a product, platform or service that could be adopted in the marketplace.

Berkeley-headquartered KoBold Metals informed its business partners that their find is likely the largest copper discovery in more than a decade. According to their estimates the mine would produce at least 300,000 tons of copper a year. That corresponds to a value of billions of dollars a year, for decades.
