Saturday night viewing on September 30 to all ages and will be shown on Shorebird Park Nature Center lawn. Don’t forget your snacks, blankets, and low-height chairs.
Come discover how plants we choose for our gardens impact migratory birds and pollinators like bees through a group discussion and a documentary, "Wings of Life."
The discussion — which will be outdoors on the Berkeley waterfront — will cover the benefits to wildlife (and water conservation) of using native plants, the negative impact of outdoor cats on bird life, and the migrations of birds, butterflies, and bees.
After the discussion, watch the documentary on a large, portable 20-foot by 12-foot inflatable screen with premium audio-visual equipment designed for outdoor cinema.
Wings of Life Saturday, September 30, 7:00 pm - 8:45 pm Shorebird Nature Center, 160 University Ave
To request an accommodation, please contact Anthony DeCicco at naturecenter@berkeleyca.gov or call (510) 981-6720 at least two days before the movie date.
Come early, bring low-height chairs, blankets
Be sure to pack blankets, sleeping bags, snacks, and low-back beach chairs with a maximum height of 9 inches to ensure an unobstructed view for all attendees. Don't forget to bring a flashlight or headlamp to make your exit easier at the end of the event. Please be aware that this is an alcohol-free event.
Parking is available in the dirt lot behind Adventure Playground or the South Cove lot just to the east of the nature center lawn. See the available parking area circled in red in the image below.
Parking in the L & M lots is restricted.
This family discussion and documentary night is just one of a variety of events throughout the year organized by the City's Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department, which offers dozens of camps, classes, and other activities for people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. Get a glimpse of the Recreation Division's offerings through our online registration portal.
The focus on native plants is also something that the Parks department has prioritized – and which you can see on display as you drive to Shorebird Park. The Marina landscaping alongside the recently paved University Avenue entryway and roundabout is lined with native grasses, flowers and other plants.
Come use the group discussion and documentary on Saturday night to learn more about the impact of native plants on the lives of birds, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Avoid parking in certain residential areas on Cal football local game days, when increased fines and towing start at 8:00 am.
The scheduled game days fall on September 9, 16, and 30, October 7 and 28, and November 11.
Avoid parking in areas where you don't have a residential permit. If you’re coming from out of town, use BART, AC Transit, or find an alternative mode, like shared bicycles and scooters, that reduce traffic and are better for our climate.
Parking fines for those without residential permits are $225, and tow-away areas have been added in various sections of Residential Parking Permit Zones B, D, F, G, I, and K. See larger images of the enforcement map and parking garage options.

Complete a brief survey about how your household would handle an emergency evacuation in the face of a wildfire, tsunami, or other disaster.
These responses will help the City develop an estimate of how long it will take Berkeleyans to get out of the path of an emergency hazard – and then develop tools to help.
The survey will ask about your household size, transportation routines, estimated commute times, and current household evacuation plans.
We want responses even if you still need to create an evacuation plan. We want to create a plan based on all realities. Fill out the survey even if you don’t live near a wildfire zone, where such a plan takes on greater urgency. An evacuation may require people in unaffected areas to take a role.
Have one person per household complete Berkeley’s Community Evacuation Survey by September 30, 2023.
