The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and at long last, Spring has arrived in Berkeley! From meeting new people to trying new things, Spring is a fantastic time to get involved in your local community. Join Adopt-A-Spot volunteers and staff in Berkeley in beautifying our city and welcoming in a new season of opportunity.

New Community Services Specialist and Program Coordinator - Joseph Griffin

We are happy to introduce Joseph Griffin, the City of Berkeley's new Community Services Specialist and Program Coordinator for the Adopt-a-Spot Traffic Circle and Storm Drain program. Joseph has served the City of Berkeley in various roles over the past 4 years within Recreation and Zero Waste. He brings experience in both volunteer and project management from the City of San Francisco's Recreation and Parks Department Volunteer Division, as Program Coordinator for the Alemany Farm Community Garden.

Joseph is a native Californian, born and raised in East Palo Alto. He enjoys bringing people together through environmental stewardship, volunteerism, and community beautification projects. He is excited to serve the community through Berkeley's Adopt-a-Spot program and work with passionate volunteers that care about making their neighborhoods beautiful by increasing the biodiversity and health of Berkeley's local ecosystem.

The city of Berkeley's Public Works Department is excited to announce a virtual community presentation to discuss the current state and future goals of the Adopt-A-Spot program! To attend the event, please navigate to this link at the start time. Both time slots consist of the same presentation, choose the time that is most convenient for you! The 30-minute presentation will consist of remarks from program lead Joseph Griffin, as well as a Q&A section.

Berkeley Bay Festival Recap

We at Public Works loved seeing everyone from the community who attended the annual Earth Day celebration at the Berkeley Bay Festival! From prize wheels to diorama demonstrations, we hope you enjoyed visiting our booth and learning more about how Berkeley's storm water system affects the bay, and how to take care of it yourself!

A historic rainy season hasn't let up yet. Rain washes everything from tree leaves to trash down to the bay through our storm water system. Help protect our local aquatic ecosystem, prevent localized flooding from storms, and beautify your neighborhood by adopting a storm drain today! Traffic Circles that Need Your Love

Did you know that over 90% of Berkeley's traffic circle have been adopted by volunteers? But the remaining five traffic circles could use some love too! Consider adopting one of these traffic circles today by visiting our Adopt-A-Traffic Circle website:

Native Plants for a Healthier Berkeley

In close collaboration with the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, community members were offered propagated pollinator plants to be planted in traffic circles throughout Berkeley. We thank the tremendous work done by the Botanical Garden to help supply our Adopt-A-Traffic Circle volunteers with native vegetation that beautifies Berkeley and helps support local pollinators.
