Do you have a startup idea? Are you looking for a proven method to validate your idea?
Intro to Lean Startup: NSF I-Corps Method includes three evening sessions that teach you to identify your top customer segment, define value propositions to de-risk your idea, and how to find product market fit.
Bay Area Regional NSF I-Corps will also offer a second class at the same time in March: I-Corps @ LSEC, a collaborative course with the UC Berkeley Life Sciences Entrepreneurship Center, with curriculum tailored to early stage life science startups.
Eligible teams that complete either course might also qualify for the National NSF I-Corps program, which includes a $50,000 customer discovery grant. Teams that complete the national program have a much higher funding rate, including SBIR grants and investment.

StopWaste is offering grants with a total of $1.1 million available in funding for projects in six categories. The focus is on innovative approaches to preventing waste in Alameda County and supporting local communities. Businesses, nonprofits, and institutions are eligible for funding, unless noted otherwise.

 The California Office of the Small Business Advocate has awarded funding to the Chabot - Las Positas Community College District for the Microbusiness COVID-19 Relief Grant Program to provide grants to microbusinesses in the counties of Alameda, Amador, Contra Costa, and El Dorado. This program will provide grants of $2,500 to microbusiness (businesses that have fewer than 5 employees and earn less than $50,000 per year) that were in operation in 2019, are still in operation, and were impacted by the COVID-19 public health restrictions.

Starting Up is an introductory online entrepreneurship course that is free and open to everyone. Companies can use state-of-the-art instruments and services on the UC Berkeley campus for a fee through the Berkeley Research Infrastructure Commons (RIC). The Berkeley RIC serves startups as well as large companies and RIC facilities include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), DNA sequencing and genomics, single crystal and powder x-ray crystallographic analysis, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and wet lab benches.

BERKELEY INNOVATORS MAKING NEWS
Wild Earth co-founder and CEO Ryan Bethencourt survived the "Shark Tank" and most recently a new round of pitching investors. The Berkeley and Durham, North Carolina-based startup secured $23 million and is developing new lines of pet food using cell-cultivated meats.

Berkeley-based precision medicine solutions provider Newomics Inc. has announced that it has sold its 100th mass spectrometry front-end system, thereby contributing to successful customer applications in the development of biotherapeutics such as Covid-19 antibodies and gene therapy, blood-based clinical diagnosis, and proteomics research. Customers include 8 of the top 10 global biopharmaceutical companies and leading academic and biotech institutions.

IT layoffs are continuing in 2023: The latest technology company to recently unveil large layoffs is Berkeley-based quantum computing startup Rigetti Computing, which will terminate 28% of its employees. Rigetti had approximately 200 employees as of December, with offices in the US, UK and Australia.
