Planning Commission to hear updated proposal for new zoning district enabling R&D facilities on former Pacific Steel Casting site in West Berkeley

Spur Capital Partners is working with Berkeley-based Rhoades Planning Group to assemble nearly 11 acres of industrial land in West Berkeley's Gilman District with the goal of building what would become the neighborhood’s largest life science development (approximately 900,000 square feet of lab and R&D space).

Last month the City of Berkeley Planning Commission received a presentation on proposed zoning amendments that would rezone the area from M (Manufacturing) to a new district entitled M-RD (Manufacturing, Research and Development) and conducted a public hearing on the scope and content of the corresponding Environmental Impact Report. Based on the feedback received, City staff have revised the draft zoning standards and the Planning Commission will receive a follow-up staff presentation on the topic tonight.

Attend tonight's (March 1) Planning Commission meeting live at 7:00pm at the South Berkeley Senior Center (2939 Ellis Street) to learn more or provide your feedback on the revised M-RD zoning regulations by emailing Planning Commission Secretary Grace Wu.

The Berkeley Startup Cluster has partnered with the Cal State University Institute for STEM Education to organize “STEM CareerX” tours of local innovation companies for Berkeley High School students to learn how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills will apply in the workplace. At Berkeley startup Channing St Copper, students from the National Society of Black Engineers Jr. (NSBE Jr.) got the chance to see how quickly induction stoves can boil a pot of water – and how to fry dumplings on an unplugged portable induction cooktop using the power from the sun and a battery!

The Berkeley Startup Cluster looks forward to upcoming tours at Twelve and Conception Bio in West Berkeley.

Contact the City of Berkeley Office of Economic Development if your company would like to host a STEM CareerX tour in the future or make a donation to help NSBE Jr. students at Berkeley High attend the NSBE Annual Convention where they’ll connect with other black STEM students and professionals and get a “blueprint” on how to excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.
