BERKELEY STARTUP CLUSTER HIGHLIGHTS

Berkeley Startup Map Shows Innovation Hubs Citywide

12-2022 startups in Berkeley

The Berkeley Startup Cluster has updated its website map of startups and innovation companies with the latest data (from Q4 2022).  Companies are color coded by industry and shown by address and City Council district. The most significant concentrations of innovation activity are found on the UC Berkeley campus, in Downtown Berkeley, and in West Berkeley, with software and biotech companies comprising the greatest share.

Check out the map and let us know if we are missing a Berkeley startup.

Gilman Gateway

Discussions on the proposed Gilman Gateway R&D campus get underway

Spur Capital Partners is working to assemble nearly 11 acres of industrial land in West Berkeley with the goal of building what would become the neighborhood’s largest life science development.  On behalf of Oklahoma-based Spur Capital, Berkeley-based Rhoades Planning Group submitted an application in December for the new development which would include 900,000 square feet of lab and R&D space, using 640 Gilman St. as the primary project address.

The City of Berkeley is accepting public comment for the Environmental Impact Report for the proposed Gilman Gateway Rezone project, located on the former Pacific Steel Casting site and adjacent parcels. The initial campus concept and City staff reports on the rezoning opportunity were presented to the Planning Commission on Wednesday, Feb. 1 - see the Item 12 in the meeting agenda packet, which includes the Office of Economic Development's report on “The Innovation Ecosystem in West Berkeley ─ An Economic Snapshot” (PDF pages 131-158).

Read more about the proposed project in the SF Business Times and in SF Yimby.

To provide comments or questions to help inform the environmental review process, email Ashley James at the City of Berkeley before Feb. 27.
