Berkeley, targeting R&D users, takes second look at local zoning codes

Berkeley’s City Council signaled its unanimous support earlier this month for the Keep Innovation in Berkeley initiative, a series of recommendations aimed at keeping Berkeley-born R&D startups in the city as they grow and mature. The initiative would permit and even encourage R&D businesses in more parts of Berkeley and streamline the permitting process for startups to secure new facilities. District 7 Councilmember Rigel Robinson has spearheaded the effort.

The CITRIS Seed Funding program issues short-term, competitive awards of $40,000–$60,000 per project to advance information technology research and catalyze early work that can benefit industry, the public sector, and society at large.

Bakar Labs Biotech Incubator Open to Startups, Growing Companies

Bakar Labs

The Bakar Labs incubator, located on UC Berkeley's campus in a landmark building fully outfitted for advanced bioscience R&D, is home to 23 companies and takes applications on a rolling basis. Technologies being developed in-house include gene therapy, pharmaceutical and biological therapeutics, alternative meats, genomics, and platforms for industrial biotech. Wet labs and offices are rented at market rates and tenants can access in-house equipment and Berkeley campus core facilities.
