The HPC4 Energy Innovation Program, where the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is a participant, is a great opportunity for those interested in leveraging High-Performance Computing (HPC) for sustainable energy advancements, helping companies get access to resources, and developing full proposal plans.

For anyone with a technology-based startup idea that originated at a university or academic lab, Bay Area NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) offers a one-week course based on Steve Blank's Lean LaunchPad. Three evening sessions will teach you to identify and refine your value propositions and customer segments, essential to de-risking your idea and achieving product-market fit. Teams that complete the national program have a much higher funding rate and might qualify for the National NSF I-Corps program which includes a $50,000 customer discovery grant.

Bakar Labs, UC Berkeley's "Deeptech" incubator supporting startups in biotech, pharma, agtech, foodtech, and other cutting-edge fields, will be a launchpad for more than 50 companies. Tenants can take advantage of shared equipment and connections to investors and industry partners.

Berkeley-based startup MeliBio received a special mention in TIME’s list of The Best Inventions of 2021 for their honey made without bees.

AralezBio CEO & co-founder Christina Boville (Activate Berkeley Cohort 2019) received the "Founders to Watch" award by Pillar VC at the recent Founder-Led Biotech Summit. Aralez Bio harnesses and trains enzymes to unlock an unprecedented array of amino acids and other chemical building blocks while cutting waste, energy consumption, and costs.

Twelve (formerly Opus 12) is a Berkeley-based carbon transformation company making everyday products out of air. Their founders recently went on the My Climate Journey podcast to talk about the company’s work, mission, and plans for the future.

Cultured fat company Mission Barns has announced a co-manufacturing partnership with Silva Sausage Co to begin the first-ever full-scale production run of Mission Chorizo Sausage. This is an important step for the company and other Berkeley-based plant food and clean meat companies. Mission Barns has created its animal-free Mission Fat from pig, duck, chicken and cow cells. The fat in the sausage product, the company says, is from pork.

Invesco recently bought 600 Bancroft in Berkeley, a 3-building complex leased to tenants Bonneville Labs, Life Long Medical Care, Lumiphore, and Blue Current for $39.4M. The Class B office complex is nestled among many other West Berkeley research and development facilities.

Squishy Robotics is a robotics company developing robots that can provide additional information leading to improvements in disaster and emergency response. These robots have been used in many training exercises and are helping current disaster and emergency response teams.
