For UC Berkeley students, find your Spring 2022 internship with a SkyDeck startup at the SkyDeck Virtual Intern Fair. This is one of the largest intern fair’s at UC Berkeley and the Bay Area, with the last one drawing 450 students, resulting in over 200 internships.

Application Deadline: Monday, November 22
The Berkeley Haas Blockchain Initiative is requesting proposals in the subject areas of blockchain and distributed systems, cryptocurrency and digital payments, cryptography, and related subject areas such as blockchain for financial inclusion and economic development. Up to $5,000 is available for student research projects with the support of an advising faculty member, with funded projects beginning in 2022.

This program is a two-year fellowship in partnership with the non-profit Activate for science innovators looking to advance hard technologies that have the potential for broad societal impact from concept to viable first product at Cyclotron Road, a division of the Berkeley Lab. Emerging science entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply to gain the funding, knowledge, network, Berkeley Lab access, and camaraderie needed at the early stages of their ventures. Fellows receive a yearly living & relocation stipend, health insurance, and a travel allowance, enabling them to focus on their project full-time. Each project also receives $100,000 of research support.

Bakar Labs, the UC Berkeley incubator supporting startups in biotech, pharma, agtech, foodtech, and other cutting-edge fields, tells us that its first tenants will be moving in later this month. When full, the incubator will be a launchpad for more than 50 companies. Tenants can take advantage of shared equipment and connections to investors and industry partners. You'll find Bakar Labs on Bancroft Way in the new Bakar BioEnginuity Hub in Woo Hon Fai Hall, the former Berkeley Art Museum, seismically retrofitted and built out with brand-new labs that can be rented at market rate, one bench at a time.

The OUP tech and life sciences investment team is offering completely free, open, and informal VC office hours to UC Berkeley startup founders, graduate students, and professors thinking of commercializing research.
Fill out the form to schedule a time to get VC feedback on your startup idea, technology de-risking, product-marketing fit, and fundraising.
For startups that have previously received SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) or STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) grants, additional opportunities to compete for funding to develop working prototypes of your discoveries are available through new DOE (Department of Energy) funding.

BERKELEY INNOVATORS MAKING NEWS
On November 4, Upside Foods hosted the grand opening of their new Engineering, Production & Innovation Center (EPIC) with plans to produce 400,000 pounds of cultivated meat per year. This is a huge step in the development and innovation of cultivated meat, with Upside Foods becoming one of the first cultivated meat companies in the world to enter full production.

Intropic Materials won the top prize in the Create the Future Contest out of a pool of engineers and students from 55 countries for their self-destructing plastic. A fellow in Activate at the Berkeley Lab, Intropic Materials has developed plastics that self-destruct and completely degrade in days by embedding enzymes in the plastics during manufacturing.

Berkeley Ventures, Berkeley Values Pitch Competition Audience Choice Winner Geopogo just signed a commercialization agreement with Magic Leap to market and sell Geopogo AR software globally to architects, builders, and their clients! This agreement will enable better use of Geopogo’s technology, helping increase the adoption of their AR technology.

At the UC Berkeley Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases, biochemist Julia Schaletzky and her team tested thousands of approved drugs and found one that, in combination with Remdesivir, completely eliminates COVID-19 from cells. They worked with the Office of Technology Licensing to make the technology available for licensing. This discovery shows how crucial it is to have an efficient process that helps move promising discoveries outside the lab.
