The Westly Prize is offering $40,000 cash prizes to social entrepreneurs under age 28 with novel solutions to community challenges at home or around the world. Innovations must be prototyped and scalable, and the innovators must live, work, or attend school in California, or reside in California but attend school elsewhere.

Food System 6 is building a more equitable and sustainable food and agriculture system by supporting entrepreneurs focused on health, sustainability, and justice. FSG6 supports early-stage for-profit and non-profit entrepreneurs who are tackling food system challenges across the following impact areas: healthy people, vibrant farms, sustainable ecosystems, justice & fairness.

The Biosciences & Bio-Engineering program supports PIs at UC Berkeley, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Currently this program is inviting submission of proposals that outline ideas for research and analyses focused on mixotrophy that use non-traditional energy relying on soluble inorganic energy and carbon sources. Annual project funds will be capped at $250,000 each year over a maximum of three years.

The WITI@UC Athena Awards recognize those who embody, encourage, and promote the inclusion of women in technology. Awardees are leaders who inspire others to pursue and persist in technical careers by way of their outstanding contributions, and service and mentorship to foster inclusion in science and technical fields. Selected fellows receive a $80K-$110K yearly living stipend, access to world class research facilities, and unparalleled support in moving their ideas from science to product.

The Startup Law Initiative at Berkeley Law (SLI), an initiative of the University of California, offers free incorporation services to entrepreneurs. SLI’s services allow Bay Area founders to overcome costly barriers to conducting business. Founders will work with Berkeley Law students and attorneys from top Silicon Valley law firms to make ideas become reality.

Berkeley-based Caribou Biosciences was announced a winner of Biocom's Fourth Annual Catalyst Awards. The awards identify accomplished and up-and-coming academics, entrepreneurs, investors, corporate leaders and business advisers who are making their mark on the San Diego, Los Angeles and Bay Area life science industries before reaching their 40th birthday.

Eko, a Berkeley-based startup best known for creating an electronic stethoscope to monitor your heart rhythm, hopes further research and development will help give its more clinically promoted device a leg up as a leader in the fight against heart disease. The company recently closed on a $20 million round of Series B financing, led by Artis Ventures.

Berkeley-based company, Humm, has created a soft patch that sticks to your forehead like a Band-Aid and emits electric micro-pulses aimed at the brain's prefrontal cortex. The Humm patch, which immediately improves your working memory and ability to learn is available for about $5, making it easy for people give it a try. PitchBook Data released its annual ranking of undergrad programs with the most female startup founder alumni. UC Berkeley ranks third (with 128 founders among its 1,235 overall undergrad alumni startup founders) and is tied for second place with Harvard in terms of the number of startups created by its female undergrad alumni: 128 startups. The number of startups that included female founders has held steady overall at around 15 percent.
