Berkeley Lab's Cyclotron Road Accepting Nominations for Next Cohort

Cyclotron Road, a two-year fellowship program for entrepreneurial scientists and engineers who are working toward commercializing an energy- or microelectronics-related research advance, is holding webinars for those interested in applying to the program this fall. Fellows receive access to the Berkeley Lab, a network of investors and scientific collaborators, mentorship and research funds.

The Bay Area NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Node is offering a one-week intensive course based on Steve Blank's Lean LaunchPad. Three evening sessions will help you de-risk your idea and achieve product-market fit. Outside of class, teams do 15 interviews with potential customers as part of the customer discovery process.

$31.5 Million in New Grants to Support Scientific Advancement

The Department of Energy (DOE) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs issued its first Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for Fiscal Year 2020.  The Phase I Release 1 FOA has approximately $31.5 million in available funding to allow small businesses to submit applications to establish the technical feasibility of new innovations that advance the mission of the Office of Science.

Free business incorporation for startups

The Startup Law Initiative at Berkeley Law (SLI), an initiative of the University of California, offers free incorporation services to entrepreneurs. SLI’s services allow Bay Area founders to overcome costly barriers to conducting business. Founders will work with Berkeley Law students and attorneys from top Silicon Valley law firms to make ideas become reality.

New UC Berkeley Space for Energy & Bioscience Companies

Nestled within the UC Berkeley College of Natural Resources, the Energy & Biosciences Institute’s Entrepreneurial Business Incubator (EBI2) has space available for lease by biological and chemical research companies. The facilities contain analytical instruments and equipment for chemical and biological applications such as fermenters, GCs, HPLCs, ICs, anaerobic chambers, and a lyophilizer. Tenants also have access to EBI2 dedicated staff and undergraduate interns as well as a private meeting room.

UC Berkeley's New Data Science Fellowship Program

UC Berkeley, in collaboration with UCSF and Janssen Research and Development, recently announced the launch of a new data science fellowship program that will explore innovative, data-driven approaches to improve human health and train the next generation of leaders in the healthcare data sciences. The prestigious 2-year program is accepting outstanding candidates from industry and academic data science.

Moody’s Corporation purchased a controlling stake in Four Twenty Seven, a Berkeley-based company and a 2015 LAUNCH Finalist. The company measures the physical risks of climate change and tracks their impact on 2,000 companies, 196 countries and global supply chains.

Perfect Day’s Animal-Free Ice Cream Sells Out Within Hours

With facilities in Berkeley and Emeryville, Perfect Day Foods produces dairy proteins (casein and whey) to get the delicious texture of dairy without milking a cow. Ultimately, they hope to partner with other businesses that mass produce dairy products, but their limited release ice cream was an initial proof of concept.

Respira Lab CEO is Revolutionizing Lung Home Healthcare

Maria Artunduaga, Founder and CEO of Respira Labs, one of Berkeley SkyDeck’s HotDesk Teams, won a Silicon Valley Business Journal "40 under 40" award this year. Respira Labs was chosen for its major accomplishments in lung homecare and for creating healthy communities. Maria also advocates for greater inclusion of underrepresented minorities in STEM jobs.

Medical Devices the size of a Grain of Sand

Iota Biosciences is working on cutting-edge technology that could change the way providers treat neurological diseases. The neural dust platform from iota is powered by ultrasound, enabling the company to produce devices the size of a grain of sand that avoid the dangers associated with wire- and battery-powered implantables.

Berkeley SkyDeck Expands its Role as a Global Hub for Entrepreneurship

Berkeley SkyDeck, UC Berkeley's premier startup accelerator received more than 800 applications representing 64 countries and 213 cities for its Fall 2019 program. The new program includes 23 accelerator track startups, 105 incubator track startups, and 17 Global Innovation startups representing a wide range of industries including AI, biotech/medtech, blockchain, enterprise, consumer, hardware, robotics, and more.

The City of Berkeley Ends Taxes on Government Research Grants

Berkeley City Council voted in late May to exempt small businesses from a tax on up to $1 million in research grants. Eliminating the tax could benefit startups that spin out from UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
