Berkeley City Council approves government R&D grant tax exemption for Berkeley businesses

Berkeley City Council May 2019

On May 28, in response to feedback from local startup founders, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin proposed a change to the Berkeley Municipal Code that will exempt the first $1 million of government R&D grants from the gross receipts taxes that early-stage startup founders pay annually to the City of Berkeley. The ordinance was unanimously approved by Berkeley City Council and will go into effect before the next business license renewal cycle.

At the Women Entrepreneurs of Berkeley Leadership Exchange, Embrace Change leader Brigette Iarrusso will create a courageous space for women to share their purpose, participants will learn valuable improvisation skills centered around team building from Susie Sargent of the Un-Scripted Theatre Company, attendees can take an optional glassbaby glass blowing workshop, and the evening will wrap up with wellness and meditation. And, of course, there will be opportunities to mix and mingle over delicious food and delectable cocktails throughout the evening.

Lean LaunchPad Training by Bay Area I-Corps

The Bay Area NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Node is offering a one-week intensive course based on Steve Blank's Lean LaunchPad. The three evening sessions will focus on the Business Model Canvas, Value Propositions, and Customer Discovery, which are essential to de-risking your idea and achieving product-market fit. Outside of class, teams do 15 interviews with potential customers as part of the customer discovery process. Teams can expect to spend 20-30 hours outside of class on interviews.

SBA 2019 Growth Accelerator Fund Competition Applications now open

SBA is seeking to identify the nation's most innovative and promising small business accelerators and incubators that work with high tech entrepreneurs that are potential SBIR or STTR program applicants. These accelerators and incubators help entrepreneurs speed the launch, growth, and scale of their businesses and, ultimately, the creation of jobs.  This is a prize competition and not a grant.  The submission period for entries begins June 10 and ends June 20.

Cyclotron Road accepting nominations for next cohort

Cyclotron Road, a two-year fellowship program for entrepreneurial scientists and engineers who are working toward commercializing an energy- or microelectronics-related research advance, will hold webinars throughout the summer for those interested in applying to the program this fall (Applications will open in October). Fellows receive access to the Berkeley Lab, a network of investors and scientific collaborators, mentorship and research funds.

Development Innovation Ventures (DIV)

DIV is a USAID program that tests ideas and scales proven solutions for global development challenges. DIV provides tiered grant funding ($50,000 to $5,000,000) for innovative solutions that demonstrate rigorous evidence of impact, cost-effectiveness, and a viable pathway to scale. Applications are accepted year-round on a rolling basis.

UC Berkeley tops the list when it comes to spawning funded founders

UC Berkeley blows other public universities out of the water when it comes to graduating startup founders who have raised $1 million or more. Perhaps due to its exceptional STEM educational programs and proximity to the venture capital-rich San Francisco Bay Area, Cal has produced nearly three times the number of funded founders (240) as has UCLA (the runner-up).

Codi turns living rooms into coworking spaces

If you work remotely and don’t want to log more hours at your neighborhood coffee shop, Codi connects you with another local option: your neighbor’s living room. Launched in Berkeley, the platform turns apartments and houses into temporary, affordable coworking spaces during the day. Codi recently raised a Seed Round co-led by Coatue and NfX and will fully launch in the Bay Area in the coming months before expanding to other cities

Politics aside, climate data is a growing business

Emilie Mazzacurati, founder and CEO of the Berkeley-based climate data firm Four Twenty Seven, spoke to Marketplace Tech's Molly Wood about how her company translates climate data into actionable information for businesses and helps them determine how to prepare for the risks that will result from extreme weather in the years ahead.

Newomics to co-market with Thermo Fisher Scientific

Berkeley-based Newomics Inc., a commercial-stage biotechnology company that sells and develops mass spectrometry products, services and diagnostics, announced a co-marketing agreement with Thermo Fisher Scientific earlier this month. The companies will engage in joint marketing of multinozzle emitters from Newomics and liquid chromatography (LC) and mass spectrometry (MS) systems from Thermo Fisher.

Kiwi robots delivering in Berkeley

Of the 12 key players in the growing delivery robots industry, nine are headquartered in the Bay Area.  With 10 employees, Kiwi Campus is based in Berkeley and can make 1.5 deliveries per hour on average.  CEO Felipe Chavez hopes this number will increase to 2.5 by early next year.

Sensys Networks merges with Sweden-based TagMaster

Last month, Berkeley-based Sensys Networks, Inc., the world’s leading provider of integrated wireless traffic data systems for Smart Cities, announced their merger with TagMaster, a global provider of sensor-based solutions in traffic, tolling, parking and rail. TagMaster is a Swedish technology company that designs and markets advanced sensor-based systems and solutions based on radio and vision technology (RFID, Radar and ANPR) for demanding environments.
