Call for Nominations: Berkeley Visionary Awards

The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce created the Visionary Awards in 2013 to celebrate people with the imagination and persistence to innovate in the city of Berkeley. These enterprises represent the latest generation of Berkeleyans working to change the world. Their visions are key to the vitality of Berkeley and the greater Bay Area.

If you know of deserving candidate, nominate them before the end of May at Berkeley Visionary Awards.


Berkeley City Councilmembers Tour SkyDeck and the
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab


In April, Berkeley City Councilmembers Sophie Hahn (District 5), Rigel Robinson (District 7), and Lori Droste (District 8), toured SkyDeck and learned how this UC Berkeley affiliated "deeptech" accelerator teaches has helped teams representing 17 countries raise over $1 billion. Squishy Robotics and Artivive leaders shared how their technologies are providing novel solutions for hazmat cleanup and artists, respectively.

Later in April, Councilmembers Hahn and Robinson toured the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, including visits to the Advanced Light Source (ALS) and Molecular Foundry. They learned from Director Mike Witherell how the Berkeley Lab is creating transformational solutions for scientific, energy and technological challenges facing the country and how the Lab's tech transfer process and Cyclotron Road accelerator contribute to the local economy.

These were the second and third stops for Berkeley Citycouncilmembers as part of the Berkeley Innovation Assets tours organized by the Berkeley Startup Cluster.

Lean LaunchPad Training by Bay Area I-Corps

The Bay Area NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Node is offering a one-week intensive course based on Steve Blank's Lean LaunchPad. The three evening sessions will focus on the Business Model Canvas, Value Propositions, and Customer Discovery, which are essential to de-risking your idea and achieving product-market fit. Outside of class, teams do 15 interviews with potential customers as part of the customer discovery process. Teams can expect to spend 20-30 hours outside of class on interviews.

An Entrepreneur-Team (E-Team) is a multidisciplinary group of students working together with faculty to bring an invention to market. Receive an E-Team grant up to $25K and get training through the early-stage innovator training program. The program provides peer networking, expert coaching, national recognition, and hands-on workshops to move your innovation forward.

Eclipse Foods: A Leader in Plant Based Alternatives 

Berkeley-based Eclipse Foods co-founder Thomas Bowman is creating a line of animal-free products made with a new proprietary plant-based milk. In addition to having a more milk-like flavor, their product is more versatile than other competitors and can be used to make a wide range of dairy products.

Cuberg Launches First Drone with a Lithium-Metal Battery

Cuberg is an alumni of the Berkeley Lab's Cyclotron Road's accelerator cohort 2 and has support from Boeing, various venture capitalists, and the U.S. Department of Energy. They just successfully tested the first drone powered by their new, non-flammable lithium-metal batteries. During the flight test, the quadcopter flew 70 percent longer than the one powered by a traditional lithium-ion battery.

EkoDuo Recognized in Fast Company's World Changing Ideas 2019 

UC Berkeley SCET alumni Eko DUO was recognized as a finalist in the Health and Wellness category. Eko is committed to creating new paradigms for heart disease screening and monitoring through low-cost sensors and innovative applications machine learning algorithms.

Teho offers stress reduction through machine learning 

UC Berkeley Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology (SCET) student Swetha Prabakaran received an honorable mention in the NCWIT Collegiate Awards for her project, Teho.  Teho is a new web application and calendar integration program that prompts users to enter data about their mental or emotional state after completing various scheduled activities. NCWIT Collegiate Awards recognize undergraduate and graduate women for their outstanding computing accomplishments.

EMA Partners with Berkeley SkyDeck 

MA Design Automation, a full-service provider and innovator of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) solutions, today announced a partnership with Berkeley SkyDeck. This partnership provides OrCAD software to SkyDeck startups for use in the design and development of printed circuit board (PCB) electronics within their innovative products..
