The Commons is Ashoka U's virtual accelerator which offers an online, professional development program for higher education faculty and staff working to advance social innovation education opportunities on their campuses. The spring semester goes from February to May, lasts 20 to 25 hours total, and costs $1,500/participant.

BERKELEY ENTREPRENEURS MAKING NEWS
By displacing petroleum-derived material with engineered, bio-based alternatives, Berkeley-based company Visolis aims to create renewable products for the circular economy. The company is currently manufacturing bio-based feedstocks for a range of specialty products and it is positioned to scale up its production significantly.

The biotechnology startup MicroByre is working towards training bacteria to break down biomass and greatly reduce the 11.2 billion tons of solid waste collected worldwide each year. eProject Builder, a collaboration of three scientific divisions at Berkeley Lab, won the 2018 R&D 100 Award for their online data management tool for water/energy retrofits. Opus 12, a Berkeley-based company, is a co-recipient of a Special Recognition Award for their device that recycles carbon dioxide into renewable fuels. The technologies may lead to advances in building efficiency and sustainable energy production, among other possible applications.
