Women Entrepreneurs of Berkeley (WEB) is hosting a networking pizza happy hour at the newly opened Gio's Pizza & Bocce to provide a meaningful opportunity for attendees to:

  • Meet the inspirational advisors to the Women Entrepreneurs of Berkeley
  • Learn more about WEB’s goals and planned activities for 2017-18
  • Provide input on the topics and events that will support women-owned businesses, entrepreneurs, and business decision-makers
  • Share business challenges and aspirations with fellow Berkeley businesswomen
  • Build Berkeley’s amazing community of women-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.  

The mission of Women Entrepreneurs of Berkeley is to connect innovative women with the resources and networks they need to accelerate their businesses.

Switch, Pivot or Quit Podcast Features WEB Advisors

Switch, Pivot or Quit, the #1 podcast for women's empowerment in the San Francisco Bay Area features women who have navigated through the Plot Twist years of life and touches on issues of personal and professional development, personal branding and more. This month it will feature interviews with two WEB advisors. 

On Oct. 25, Switch, Pivot or Quit will release the podcast of its interview with WEB Advisor, Elizabeth Redman Cleveland, where she will share reflections from the recent shifts she has made across sectors - and continents. 

And on Oct. 26, Switch, Pivot or Quit will host a live podcast taping featuring WEB advisor Kate McEachern, who will discuss her experience as the co-owner of the coworking space The Office, as well as her entrepreneurial venture launching Cupkates, one of the first Bay Area desert trucks.

Apply to Join the CITRIS Foundry Accelerator

Now - October 27: Fall application window for the 2017 Startup Cohort

The CITRIS Foundry (Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society) is a University of California applied technology accelerator based at UC Berkeley that supports early stage startups developing transformative technology. The CITRIS Foundry is currently taking applications for their 12-month program which will allow selected startups to receive funding, deep tech mentorship, and access to University of California laboratories.

Applications Open for the Cyclotron Road Accelerator  

Now - October 31: Fall application window for Cyclotron Road's Fourth Cohort

Cyclotron Road provides two-year fellowships to support entrepreneurial scientists and engineers developing energy technologies based in the physical and biological sciences. Fellows are embedded at Berkeley Lab, where they work to bring their ideas to the point of commercial viability. The program provides access to facilities, equipment, and expertise at Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley, initial research funding, and a rewarding mentorship experience.

UC Berkeley's startup accelerator, SkyDeck, has established itself as an integral part of the city's innovative culture and a hub for talented Cal entrepreneurs. By installing the SkyDeck sign on two sides of the 13-story building's rooftop, the SkyDeck Building (as it will be called thereafter)   will celebrate Berkeley born and bred innovation. Join the SkyDeck community as we celebrate the sign's unveiling!

Apply to be a Tory Burch Foundation Fellow

The Tory Burch Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on supporting the empowerment of women entrepreneurs in the United States. The Fellows Program selects up to 10 Fellows to participate in a one-year program which includes:

  • Mentoring, networking and business guidance for one year.
  • A $10,000 grant to further business education.
  • A three-day trip to New York City including the opportunity to participate in a pitch competition in which the winner will receive a $100,000 grant investment.

Free Legal Assistance for New Women Owned Businesses

Ongoing, with a January 31, 2018 submission deadline

UC Berkeley Law's New Business Practicum provides free legal help to new businesses that can't afford an attorney.  Entrepreneurs work with trained, well-supervised law students to address the many legal tasks that businesses must solve to sustain and attract investment.  The New Business Practicum accepts applications throughout the year and will select businesses to serve in January 2018 for the Spring Term. 

The Practicum also provides weekly limited-service office hours on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1-5 pm, along with monthly online trainings.

BERKELEY WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS MAKING NEWS


Berkeley-based Packlane in Forbes magazine

Packlane, founded by Bay Area native Miriam Brafman, was featured in an article of the Entrepreneurship section of Forbes Magazine in September. Brafman was unable to find a vendor who could provide customized shipping boxes for her products, which led her to become the founder of a company whose website allows brands of all types to custom-make and order boxes for their products.

Berkeley innovator and entrepreneur receives Berkeley Visionary Award

Amy Herr, UC Berkeley bioengineering professor and co-founder of the private protein-analysis company Zephyrus Biosciences, was honored this past month at the Berkeley Visionary Awards. Organized by the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce and held at the Berkeley Repertory Theater, the Berkeley Visionary Awards recognized Herr for her ability to discover a process which could help researchers better understand and treat cancer.
