Introducing Belmont’s FY 2025-26 Budget
On May 27, the City Council received the proposed FY 2025-26 Budget, which outlines a thoughtful and balanced plan that supports our community’s top priorities, including public safety, infrastructure investment, and organizational development. While the City continues to demonstrate strong fiscal stewardship, this year’s budget was shaped by real financial headwinds both at the National and State levels. The State has again excluded critical reimbursements for the Vehicle License Fee (VLF) swap from its proposed budget, and we must now actively advocate to get it restored. This ongoing challenge, combined with broader threats to federal and state funding, places local resources at risk as Belmont works to invest in long-term sustainability and resilience. Despite these pressures, the proposed budget remains balanced and focused on delivering high-quality services to our community. The budget is scheduled for Council adoption on June 10. Visit our website to watch the City Council meeting Budget Introduction presentation from May 27 or view the staff report.

City-Wide Sanitary Sewer Root Foaming Scheduled for Mid-June
In an ongoing effort to conduct preventative maintenance on the sanitary sewer mains, Public Works maintenance staff has scheduled Dukes Root Foaming to treat 29,000 feet of sewer main city-wide. The root foaming project will start on Monday, June 17, and will be completed on Friday, June 27.
Root foam is a thick, shaving cream consistency foam that will be released into the sanitary sewer lines to kill roots on contact within the line and help prevent root regrowth for 3 years. Trees and other above-ground vegetation are not harmed. Razorooter® II, the product used, is the only diquat-based herbicide registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for controlling nuisance tree roots in sanitary sewer line collection systems and received a classification of “evidence of non-carcinogenicity for humans” (USEPA Diquat R.E.D. Facts, July 1995). Root control is a crucial component of an effective overall strategy for maintaining sewer systems.
Duke’s Root Foaming staff placed door hangers in advance of root foaming to inform residents of upcoming treatment. They will also notify residents if they need access to an easement on their property. For questions or more information, please contact the Public Works Department at (650) 595-7425.
