The City of Belmont acknowledges the announcement by Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) regarding the sale of approximately 100 acres of its historic campus and open space properties to UC Investments, a part of the University of California. This significant potential change in ownership marks a new chapter for a property that has long played a central role in the educational and community life of Belmont.
The City and community have valued the presence of NDNU for generations. From its founding roots as an educational institution to its more recent partnerships with Stanford University to explore long-term development possibilities, this site has held great promise as a community asset. The City had been encouraged by prior collaborative efforts that included shared visions for open space, educational opportunities, and community-serving uses.
“The NDNU site is an important part of our city’s identity,” said Mayor Julia Mates. “We look forward to connecting with the leadership at UC Investments to discuss our continued partnership and to ensure that the future of this property supports the values and aspirations of the Belmont community.”
Throughout its history, the NDNU site has fostered strong partnerships with the City and the community. These relationships have enriched educational opportunities, supported local youth, and enhanced the community’s connection to the site.
As the new owners consider future uses for the property, the City welcomes the opportunity to re-engage and collaborate on a vision that reflects the community’s values, history, and aspirations. The City is committed to advocating for thoughtful planning, transparency, and open dialogue as next steps unfold.
“We look forward to learning more about the goals of UC Investments,” added City Manager Afshin Oskoui, “and hope to see a renewed spirit of collaboration that honors the legacy of this space while building a shared future.”
