License Plate Readers Live in Belmont
After a thorough review and approval, the Belmont Police Department (BPD) has launched the Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) Program. Ten ALPR cameras have been strategically placed throughout Belmont. Several of these cameras are now operable and are helping to solve crime and deter criminal activity in our neighborhoods.
In March of 2024, the Belmont City Council approved the acquisition of the Automated License Plate Readers. Since then, the police department has worked with Flock Safety to implement the program and install the cameras. The BPD has also created a policy for the ALPR program, obtained the necessary user certifications, and conducted extensive training with its officers. Ongoing user training and compliance audits will be conducted according to BPD policy and applicable state and local laws.
Chief of Police Ken Stenquist commented, “We are confident that this technology, in many ways, will help us make our community safer.”
