 Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry & Essay Contest Winners Present at City Council
The winners of the third annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry & Essay Contest presented at this week's City Council meeting. For the contest, students responded to Dr. King’s quote, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?" With inspiration, passion, and bravery, students shared their thoughts and reflections on what they do for their community and how making a difference can change the world. Congratulations to the winners and all of the talented finalists!
Fire Safety Chipping Program Reminder
Starting next week, property owners west of Alameda de las Pulgas are invited to participate in a free chipping program to help maintain defensible space for greater wildfire resiliency. The program, funded by a Cal Fire grant and offered in coordination with San Mateo Consolidated Fire District, runs Monday-Friday, March 17-March 28. Cannabis Retail Storefront Public Hearings
The City is considering allowing cannabis retail storefronts to operate at 1397 El Camino and 1538 El Camino, Suite C. A City Council Public Hearing to consider the rezoning of the properties to the S-3 Cannabis Overlay Combining Zone, a Development Agreement outlining a community benefit contribution, and the Conditional Use Permit and Design Review will be held on March 25, 2025 at 7 p.m. Questions or comments about these applications should be directed to cdev@belmont.gov.

Belmont Library Upgrades Bring Temporary Closure
A reminder that the Belmont Library will temporarily close for renovations starting Wednesday, March 19, bringing fresh paint, new flooring, updated furniture and improved technology. During the closure, programs will continue at nearby locations. Please view the Belmont Library program details for the latest updates on scheduling for after-school activities and other events.
Middle and high school students can visit Barrett Community Center (1835 Belburn Drive) and Carlmont High School (1400 Alameda de las Pulgas) on most weekdays for after-school homework and hangout space. A complete list of dates and times is available on the Belmont Library website.
The book drop will be closed during the renovation, but you can return materials to any library in San Mateo County. For full library service during the renovation project, visit the nearby San Carlos Library.

Public Works Highlights
Public Works Operations staff performed preventive maintenance on our traffic signal video vehicle detection systems and replaced over 2.5 tons of failed asphalt this week.
Staff are also on storm patrol, preparing for and mitigating the impact of the storm events we are experiencing, as well as keeping sandbag stations stocked for residents.

RethinkWaste's 2025 Trash to Art Contest is now open! Students and classes in 3rd-5th grade in the RethinkWaste service area can create an art piece using materials that would otherwise have been thrown away or recycled. The deadline is Friday, March 28, at 4 p.m.
