 Celebrate Sustainably This Holiday Season
Did you know that waste increases by 25% during the holiday season, adding 5 million extra tons of trash to landfills between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day? We can reduce this impact by making small changes and enjoy a more sustainable holiday season.
Start by recycling and composting correctly. Use the blue recycling bin for wrapping paper (non-metallic), cardboard, paper gift boxes (reuse when possible), glass bottles, pie tins, and paper greeting cards. The green compost bins are for food scraps, pumpkins, turkey bones, poinsettias, soiled paper products (paper napkins, paper towels, plates), and takeout containers that do not have plastic or wax coatings.
Consider creative alternatives to traditional holiday cards—1.9 billion cards are sold annually, requiring nearly 300,000 trees! Send e-cards or repurpose old cards as gift tags. For parties, reduce waste by using reusable tableware, dishes, utensils, cloth napkins, and tablecloths. When wrapping gifts or decorating, opt for natural materials like plants and fabrics.
Together, we can make this holiday season a little greener. Let’s do our part to protect the environment and build a more sustainable community! The San Mateo County Sustainability Department offers additional resources and a thorough guide to navigating a greener holiday season.

Thank You for Supporting Belmont's Small Business Community
Thank you to all residents who participated in the Nov. 5, 2025 Municipal Election. On the ballot, voters had the opportunity to decide on Belmont's local Measure DD, an effort to modernize the City's business license tax program by making it more simplified and equitable. The City estimates the Measure will result in decreased rates for over 60% of Belmont businesses due to significantly reducing the base tax rate.
This past Thursday, the County certified the election results, including the passage of Measure DD by 85%. Changes implemented by the Measure will take effect Jan. 1, 2025, changing all businesses' licensing periods to align with the calendar year. Business owners are strongly encouraged to review our Frequently Asked Questions to learn more about how this will affect your business license rate and renewal cycle.
