 Belmont Seeks Resident Volunteers for Commissions
The City of Belmont is inviting residents to apply for positions on various City Commissions. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025. Interested individuals can apply online at www.belmont.gov/commissions, by calling 650-595-7414, or in person at the City Clerk’s Office located at One Twin Pines Lane, Suite 330 (appointments suggested).
Available Positions:

Planning Commission: 2 openings for three-year terms. Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m. The Commission reviews planning applications and advises the City Council on zoning and land use.

Parks and Recreation Commission: 3 adult openings for two-year terms. Meetings occur on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. The Commission provides recommendations on parks and recreation programs and capital improvements.

Youth Seats on Parks and Recreation Commission: 2 openings for residents aged 13-17; parental consent is required. These are non-voting positions for one-year terms.

Congratulations to City Clerk Jozi Plut for achieving the esteemed Master Municipal Clerk certification from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC). The Master Municipal Clerk program represents the highest level of professional achievement the IIMC offers. Nominations are Open for Beautiful Belmont & Community Service Awards
The City of Belmont is now accepting nominations for the Beautiful Belmont and Community Service Awards! The Beautiful Belmont Award recognizes residents and businesses for exceptional property improvements in areas like landscaping, lighting, and building enhancements and the Community Service Award honors individuals who show exemplary volunteerism and community leadership that have have impacted the community's quality of life. Winter Food Drive
Our VOICES team is excited to collaborate with Samaritan House to host a Winter Food Drive until Dec. 6. Please drop off unopened, unexpired donations at either the Parks and Recreation Office located at 30 Twin Pines Lane between Monday though Friday from 8 a.m. to noon or 1-5 p.m. or to the Hideout at Barrett Community Center located at 1835 Belburn Dr. in Room E on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3-5 p.m. or Wednesdays from 1-5 p.m.

Reorganization Ceremony
Join us for the Reorganization Ceremony of the outgoing and newly elected councilmembers, the selection of the Vice Mayor, and recognition of the 2024 Community Service and Beautiful Belmont award recipients on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. This event will be held in person at Belmont City Hall (1 Twin Pines Lane, Belmont) and virtually on Zoom (Webinar ID: 95745673035), with light refreshments to follow the ceremony.

Sensory Santa at the Firehouse
New this year: Sensory Santa at the Firehouse and Toy Drive! Santa is excited to welcome all youth with disabilities and youth who would benefit from a more sensory-friendly environment on Thursday, Dec. 12, from 5-5:30 p.m. at Belmont Fire Station 14 (911 Granada Street). Attendees will have the opportunity to visit and take photos with Santa in a calm, welcoming environment, with additional interactive components, hands-on holiday crafts, and refreshments. Our traditional Santa at the Firehouse event will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Public Works Highlights
Public Works Operations staff have diligently addressed numerous MyBelmont service requests to enhance safety and maintain city infrastructure. Recent efforts include repairing a rectangular rapid flashing beacon and other streetlights, replacing damaged traffic signs, refreshing red curb paint, and cleaning up illegally dumped debris. Staff also partnered with vendors to address ongoing streetlight and traffic signal service requests.
In addition to these tasks, routine maintenance remains a priority. Crews have been filling potholes, trimming vegetation to improve traffic sign visibility, and ensuring sandbag stations at the Barrett Community Center, City Hall parking lot, and Corporation Yard are fully stocked for residents.

Fill-Your-Own Sandbag Stations Available at Three Locations
With heavy rains, storm drain lines may be inundated with water and cause minor flooding. The City of Belmont has three fill-your-own sandbag stations to accommodate residents during the rainy season. If you need sandbags to help redirect rainwater or live in areas that regularly experience some flooding, you are strongly encouraged to pick up sandbags to prepare for possible flooding. Residents may obtain up to 10 bags per Belmont address. Sandbag stations are located at the Public Works Corp Yard (110 Sem Lane), Barrett Community Center parking lot (1870 Ralston Ave.), and Belmont City Hall (1 Twin Pines Lane). Households & Businesses are Required to Have All 3 Waste Bins to Comply with SB 1383
California law SB 1383 requires all businesses in Belmont to have composting services. This law is part of a statewide effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting organic waste from landfills and increasing edible food recovery. Businesses and all household must have all three waste bins (landfill, recycling, and composting). If you do not yet have composting services, please sign up by calling Recology at 650-595-3900.
Small Beetle Poses Big Threat to Trees in San Mateo County
The presence of an invasive beetle has been confirmed in the Redwood Shores community of Redwood City, according to the San Mateo County Department of Agriculture. Known as the shothole borer (ISHB), infestations of the pest have also been found in neighboring Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. The San Mateo County Department of Agriculture is conducting additional surveys & trapping to assess the scope of the infestation locally. Signs of the beetle include tiny entry holes or a thick resin on infested trees. Residents can report ISHB sightings and infestation by completing the ISHB Detection Assessment or calling the Department of Agriculture at (650) 363-4700.
Help Provide Insights to Make Our County More Climate Resilient
San Mateo County's Flood & Sea Level Rise Resiliency District, also known as OneShoreline, has partnered with ISeeChange to create a new, simple way for residents to report flooding, erosion, and storm impacts. Residents in San Mateo County can use ISeeChange to share photos, videos, and stories to help validate flood models, identify problem areas, and advocate for effective solutions. Learn more about the project and how you can help make the county more climate resilient.
ADU Resource Center Helps Create New Housing Units
The launch of the ADU Resource Center of San Mateo County promises to help homeowners and jurisdictions build more accessory dwelling units (ADUs) with step-by-step instructions and to create more diverse housing opportunities in the county. The Center supports residents in navigating the entire process of building an ADU, from design and permitting to construction and move-in.
