The Belmont Police Department urges the public to exercise caution when conducting in-person transactions for personal items being bought or sold. This advisory comes in response to two recent incidents where victims were robbed while attempting to sell items in Belmont.
On October 29, 2024, Belmont Police arrested 18-year-old Jose Campos Mendoza of San Jose after he allegedly robbed a victim with what was later identified as a BB gun during a transaction.
In addition, the Belmont Police Department is actively investigating a robbery that occurred in the 100 block of Irene Court around 3:30 p.m. on October 31, 2024. We ask residents and local businesses in this area to review any surveillance footage they may have. If anyone has information related to this incident or witnessed suspicious activity in the area, please contact the Belmont Police Department directly at 650-595-7400. Tips can also be reported anonymously via our tip line at 650-598-3000.
These incidents highlight the potential risks of in-person transactions in public places. The Belmont Police Department reminds residents that a designated Safe Exchange Zone is available outside City Hall for conducting such transactions in a safer environment. The area is well-lit and intended to provide a secure space for buyers and sellers to meet.
We encourage everyone to use the Safe Exchange Zone, remain vigilant, and help keep our community safe.
