Celebrating Belmont’s Older Residents
Wednesday marked National Senior Citizens Day, a day established by a presidential proclamation in 1988 to raise awareness around the issues affecting older Americans and their quality of life.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that between 2010 and 2020, the country experienced the largest increase in the older population since the late 1800s. This growth is largely due to the aging baby boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1964), who began turning 65 in 2011. Take a look at what that trend looks like in Belmont according to the US Census Bureau here:
In Belmont, supporting our older residents has always been a priority. In 2022, the City was proud to be designated as an Age-Friendly City by the World Health Organization. We offer a variety of programs and activities for those aged 50 and older, including senior day trips, tech support, fitness classes, crafts, language groups, the lunch program, movies, and so much more!
You can sign up to receive the monthly Parks Newsletter to stay informed about activities for seniors and events at the Senior Center. If you're not yet a member of the older adult community, please help us spread the word to your older friends, family members, and neighbors so they can take advantage of these wonderful programs and activities. Additional information about upcoming offerings can be viewed in the August Twin Pines Newsletter.
