Get Prepared: Attend the 20th Annual Disaster Preparedness Day
Emergencies are unpredictable, so we encourage residents to have an emergency plan for all types of disasters. The California Governor's Office of Emergency Service (Cal OES) offers free resources through Earthquake Warning California, including mobile device applications that provide automated alerts when shaking occurs and guidance on creating an effective earthquake preparedness plan.
Residents can sign up for SMC Alert, San Mateo County’s primary alert and warning system. SMC Alert is used to contact you during urgent or emergency situations, which may include life safety, fire, weather, accidents involving utilities or roadways, or disaster notifications. The County of San Mateo also offers resources to help you create an emergency preparedness plan.
To kick off your preparedness, attend the County’s 20th annual Disaster Preparedness Day on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the San Mateo County Event Center. This event focuses on readiness without scare tactics and offers free admission, parking, and hotdogs! Attendees can enjoy demonstrations on preparing emergency meals without power, assembling an emergency kit, and creating a communications plan if cell service is unavailable. Check the schedule here for locations and times to make sure you and your family get prepared this summer!
