City of Belmont's Housing Element Advances Toward Certification
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 30, 2024
The City of Belmont is pleased to announce that the State Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) has completed its review of the most recent draft of the 2023-2031 Housing Element. The HCD has found that the draft meets the statutory requirements of the State Housing Element Law, marking a crucial step towards the certification of the City’s Housing Element.
The Housing Element is a state-mandated policy document that outlines the City's goals, policies, and programs to promote the development of a diverse range of housing options. It includes both affordable and market-rate housing to meet the needs of all community members. This document is a vital component of the General Plan and outlines strategies for accommodating current and future housing needs.
Mayor Julia Mates expressed enthusiasm about the progress, stating, "This marks a significant achievement for Belmont. We are committed to meeting the State’s housing targets for our community and this demonstrates our dedication to meeting that goal."
The draft 2023-2031 Housing Element will go before the Planning Commission on August 20, 2024, for review and the City Council for review and adoption of the amended document this September. Once certified, the Housing Element will guide the City's housing policies and actions through 2031.
