FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 15, 2024
The City of Belmont will hold a General Municipal Election on Nov. 5, 2024. This year, residents will have the opportunity to run for positions in two council districts and the at-large mayor position. Two seats on the five-member City Council will be up for election—one seat from Council District 2 and one seat from Council District 4, both for four-year terms. Additionally, the position of at-large mayor will be up for election for a two-year term.
The nomination period opens today, July 15, and closes at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, 2024. Only registered Belmont voters 18 years of age may run for Mayor. Belmont voter registration and residency in Districts 2 or 4 is required to be a councilmember candidate for the respective district. Districts 1 and 3 will hold elections in 2026.
Councilmembers whose terms will be expiring are Davina Hurt, Tom McCune, and Mayor Julia Mates.
There is no filing fee for running for office, although candidates are responsible for their share of the cost of printing the candidate statement in the sample ballot booklet, should they choose to provide one. This cost also includes the required translations into Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
