Belmont Public Works Recognized for APWA Accreditation
City Council recognized our Public Works Department on Tuesday evening for their recent American Public Works Association (APWA) Accreditation, a prestigious recognition of their dedication and professionalism in serving our community. The purpose of accreditation is to promote excellence in the operation and management of a public works agency, its programs, and its employees. Accreditation is designed to assist the agency in the continuous improvement of operations and management, and in providing a valid and objective evaluation of agency programs as a service to the public and the profession. Belmont Public Works is the eighteenth agency in the State of California to receive APWA accreditation.

Fats, Oils and Grease Oh My! FOG Buildup at Sewer Pump Stations and Sewer Mains
Public Works sewer staff performed preventative maintenance and cleaned buildup of fats, oils and grease at the majority of our sewer pump stations. Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) are substances that are formed by food scraps and waste or petroleum waste. It creates blockages, damages the sewer system, and it is one of the main causes of sewer overflows.
Grease-related overflows are costly to clean up, and may expose restaurant customers, employees, food service workers, and others to health risks, and threaten wildlife by going to local creeks and the bay untreated. Learn more about guidelines for businesses and non-residential users that generate FOG in this informational brochure, and ensure compliance with local, State and Federal regulations.
