Juneteenth: A Day of Celebration & Reflection
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned from the Union Army that the Civil War had ended and that they were free. This occurred two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, it is a symbolic day of freedom and celebration for the Black community.
Juneteenth is an opportunity for our community to reflect on our history and continue educating ourselves for a more equitable future. Several resources are available to the public, such as the Smithsonian's Juneteenth resources that offer historical information and a reading list. The San Mateo County Library also provides various offerings, including a Juneteenth Celebration Painting event this Sunday, June 23, at multiple libraries in San Mateo County. Continue the conversation and explore these resources to deepen your understanding and appreciation of this important day.
