Happy New Fiscal Year - City Council Approves New Fiscal Year Budget Starting July 1
At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, the budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 was officially approved. This balanced budget aligns with the City’s Strategic Focus Areas and the community's priorities, ensuring continued investment in essential services and infrastructure. Some major budget elements include the following:
Operating Budget The operating budget addresses the day-to-day services the City provides, including the maintenance and operation of city infrastructure and assets like parks and buildings. This ensures that the community continues to enjoy high-quality public spaces and efficient city services.
Capital Improvement Program Significant investments are planned under the Capital Improvement Program, such as setting aside reserves for the construction of a new fire station, and funding major projects like roof replacements, street paving, and storm and sewer projects. These projects often span several years and are crucial for the City’s long-term development and resilience.
General Fund The General Fund, which supports most day-to-day city services, remains a key focus. Public safety constitutes the largest portion of this fund, reflecting the City’s commitment to maintaining safety and security with police officers and first responders on duty around the clock.
This comprehensive budget ensures that the City continues to thrive and meet the needs of its residents while preparing for future challenges and opportunities.
Supervisors Allocate $40 Million to Spur New Affordable Housing
San Mateo County supervisors allocated more than $40 million to spur the development of new affordable housing. Spread across seven projects, the funds would contribute to creating 431 new affordable housing units from Daly City to Menlo Park. Of the seven projects, two are in Belmont. These include the Hill Street Apartments project by Linc Housing, which will provide 37 affordable housing units, and the 65-unit project, Ridge at Ralston, by CRP Affordable Housing and Abode Housing. Caltrain Electrification Project Tree Planting
As part of the ongoing Caltrain Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project, Caltrain has committed to planting 41 trees throughout the Caltrain ROW in areas adjacent to the train tracks. The planting areas include locations along El Camino Real and Old County Road, as well as within Twin Pines, Alexander, and O'Donnell Parks. City of Belmont staff selected the planting locations and tree species to provide screening where appropriate and contribute aesthetic benefits to the greater community while increasing the overall tree canopy in Belmont. The tree plantings are a welcome addition to our urban forest!

Traffic Signal Repairs on Ralston
Public Works is working on traffic signal issues on Ralston Ave. at Old County Road and Tahoe Drive. Caltrans maintains the intersection at Old County Road, and we are working with them to troubleshoot missed vehicle detection and lack of synchronization with the El Camino Real traffic signals, resulting in heavier than usual traffic congestion. At Tahoe Drive, Public Works staff found malfunctioning vehicle detection equipment, causing the signals to cycle green for directions with no traffic. Crews made temporary repairs to the malfunctioning equipment to get the signals to resume regular operation, and we plan to replace the equipment in the coming weeks. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we remedy these issues.
