Youth Finalists Present Poetry & Essay Submissions
This week, we held an Awards Ceremony for our second annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry & Essay Contest, which received over 120 submissions. At the Ceremony, 18 finalists presented their work to a crowd of family, City staff, sponsors, and esteemed judges. The finalists, grades 3rd-12th, were passionate and brave as they shared what changes they envisioned for our community and the world in response to the quote “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
This year's judging panel comprised of Belmont’s Poet Laureate and event host, Monica Korde, Belmont Mayor Julia Mates, Belmont Councilmember Davina Hurt, Poet Lois Fried, and Education Wellness Coordinator for Belmont-Redwood Shores School District, Kristina Sevillia.
Congratulations to the following contest winners, and to all of the talented finalists.

Belmont Business Forums This Week
Our current business license program was established in 1976 and is outdated, cumbersome, and disproportionate. We are working to update to our local ordinance, making it more transparent, easy to understand, and equitable for businesses of all sizes.
We want to hear from YOU, our local business stakeholders, on updating the structure of our business license ordinance. Please join the conversation virtually or in-person next week. RSVP >

Sweetheart and Superstar Dance Recap
Last Friday, we hosted our first ever "Superstar Dance," followed by our traditional "Sweetheart Dance." The former was created to offer a sensory-friendly option for children with disabilities, including fewer attendees, no strobe lights, and no loud music. At both events, attendees danced the night away, enjoyed the photobooth, made Valentine’s crafts, and even visited with Princess Elsa!
These events were made possible by our amazing staff and high school volunteer group, VOICES. We also want to thank Belmont’s Dream Dinners for providing appetizers.
We look forward to offering more events and programs that prioritize accessibility and inclusivity in the future. Next up is our first ever Adaptive Egg Hunt on Friday, March 29. Learn more about the Adaptive Egg Hunt >
