Celebrating the Contributions of African Americans to the Arts
On Tuesday night, Mayor Julia Mates introduced a proclamation for Black History Month 2024, which was received by community member and Parks and Recreation Commissioner James Simmons.
This year, the proclamation explored the theme of "African Americans and the Arts," specifically the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression.

City Maintains Storm Readiness
This week, our Public Works crews worked diligently to clear storm drain inlets citywide, including at creek hotspots. Storm readiness also requires maintaining channels and drainage ditches, so our crews used equipment to load, haul, and dispose of materials obstructing these stormwater pathways, specifically along the John Brooks Trail and Lake Rd. All of these efforts help prevent roadway, open space, and property flooding, and we are happy to report no flooding occurring during the latest round of storms.
Self-serve sandbag stations were also well-utilized during the heavy rainfall, and our crews kept pace with the high demand, keeping all three stations stocked.
More rain is forecasted in the coming week, with a chance for the first “atmospheric river” of the season to hit California mid-to-late next week.
If you see a backed-up storm drain, please report it to our Public Works Department at (650) 595-7425. For more storm resources, please see our Storm Safety page >

Lane Closures Tonight
Please expect lane closures on Old County Rd. at Ralston Ave. tonight, Jan. 26, 8 p.m.-6 a.m. Traffic control will be in place, but we ask that you drive with caution through all construction zones.
This closure will allow a contractor to perform repairs to get the intersection's signals back in sync with El Camino Real, improving the traffic flow significantly along Ralston Ave.

Clogged Sewer Pump Restored
During a storm last Saturday, our crews were alerted of a possible failure at the Hiller St. sewer pump station. Onsite crews discovered rags, latex, and vacuum filters clogging the pump. The debris was promptly removed, and the pump reinstalled to full working order.
Friendly reminder: the only thing you should ever place in your household drains is water, and in your toilet–human waste and toilet paper!

Medical Equipment Donation Drive a Success, Receives City Support
Last Saturday, we supplied traffic control devices for a Medical Equipment Loan Program (MELP) donation drive, which gathered nearly 200 medical devices (such as wheelchairs, portable toilets, etc.) to be distributed to those in need. The event also served as a means for a local prospective Eagle Scout to earn credits toward that honor.
