Respiratory Virus Season Begins
San Mateo County Health officials urge residents six months and older to get the seasonal flu vaccine and the updated COVID-19 shot, which was approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Fall and winter mark the traditional flu season, as more activities take place indoors and holiday travel is popular.
COVID-19 is also more transmissible in confined spaces, so there is increased risk for respiratory viruses during this period.
The CDC recommends getting the flu and COVID vaccines at the same time.

Rethinking How We Toss Waste
Think before you toss the leftovers from that tasty take-out meal.
Food and food/beverage soiled paper products go in the compost.
Bottles, tubs, and cans go in the recycling.
And plastic lids, straws, condiment packets and black plastic trays go in the garbage, not the recycling bin.
Sorting right makes a difference, to re-educate yourself on today's sorting rules, click on the button below. Your efforts make a difference to our world.
September is National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month. While everyone needs to prepare for disasters, we’re putting a special emphasis this year on helping older adults be ready.
Our older community members may be at greater risk from extreme weather events and other potential emergencies, especially if they are living alone, have limited financial resources or have a disability.
Planning ahead is the key to getting through a large-scale emergency with minimal stress and disruption.
-
Get a kit of emergency supplies together. Include items that meet your individual needs, such as medicines, medical supplies, batteries and chargers.
-
Make a plan for how you will contact family members and caregivers, what mode of transportation and routes you will use in case of evacuation and where to reunite with loved ones.
-
Stay informed and know how to get updated information during an emergency. Register your cell phone and email address with SMCAlert the regional emergency mass notification system.
Find a list of what to include in your emergency supply kit, plus more disaster-preparedness resources, check this quick-start Emergency Preparedness Guide.
Belmont Talks: Resolving Trauma The path of Transformative Healing
Trauma can be disruptive, even disabling, to individuals and families. But it can also open doors to explore new resources and gifts within ourselves. Join Janene Heldman, MA, MFT (retired) on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. as she goes over the four levels of healing trauma—shock, expression, reconstruction, and transformation.
This talk will incorporate the latest scientific research in neurology and clinical interventions, as well as describe tools and exercises for each of the healing stages and the treatment modalities available.
Joining this discussion is not intended to replace individual therapy, but instead to provide an optimistic and empowering understanding of trauma, leading to increased strength and wisdom made possible from what clinicians call post-traumatic growth.
The event will be in-person at the Belmont Library and virtually, via Zoom. Click the button below to get more information and register.

National Emergency Alert Test on Oct. 4 around 11:20 a.m.
A national test of the Wireless Emergency Alert system will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023.
Alerts will be sent out to all cellphones, TV, and Radio at around 11:20 a.m.. This is a TEST.
It will be quite an abrupt sound, and may startle people who are not expecting it. This is not something you can opt out of - however, it may not alert every phone.
That is why FEMA and the FCC are testing it, to see how many phones get reached with this Test Alert.

Maintenance Work This Week
This week, we refreshed more of Old County Road.
Our Public Works Street & Traffic Operations refreshed another 630 feet of red curb paint on Old County Road which makes it about 75 percent complete. Staff will continue to refresh red curb paint here and throughout the City until the wet season begins.
We also refreshed much thermo-plastic striping throughout the City, including the crosswalk on Shoreway near Motel 6, the crosswalk on Old Ralston at Irwin, and the crosswalk on Solana at Chula Vista -- which has been upgraded to the new standard ladder style in yellow due to its proximity to a school.
We have begun refreshing the lane striping on Alameda at Ralston and will finish after the contractor working in the area has completed their project.
Staff repaired a pothole on Alameda near the library that had grown into a depression in the road. Seven tons of asphalt were replaced at this site to restore the roadway.
We have continued to monitor traffic signals at the recently troubled Ralston intersections of Hallmark, Belmont Canyon Road, and Cipriani.
So far there are no new reports of delays but some adjustments are being made to the vehicle detection zoning at Cipriani that should further reduce the chance of traffic delays.
Contact us
If you experience any delays at these or other intersections, please share this information with Public Works (pworks@belmont.gov or 650-595-7425) with date, location and time.
Upcoming Highway 101 Closures
Closures Begin Sept. 29 at 10 p.m.
Caltrans is in the process of replacing the Cordilleras Creek Bridge located along U.S. 101 in Redwood City, San Mateo County, between the Whipple Avenue and Brittan Avenue exits.
This work is necessary because the bridge has reached the end of its service life.
Caltrans is using innovative construction methods which will allow this bridge replacement project to be completed in just one year, instead of the usual three years.
To accommodate this accelerated construction schedule, a section of U.S. Hwy 101 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday night to 5 a.m. Monday morning on the following weekends:
• September 29-October 2, 2023 (southbound lanes) • October 13-16, 2023 (northbound lanes)
Residents are advised to avoid this stretch of U.S. Hwy 101 and utilize alternate routes during the closures when possible.
Digital message signs will be set up along roadways throughout the Bay Area to direct both local and regional travelers away from the closure.
