School District Transitioning to District Elections
On April 20, 2023, the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District Board adopted Resolution #19, in response to the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA).
The district intends to transition its Board elections from at-large to by-trustee area Board elections, where each Board member must reside within the designated trustee area boundary, and is elected only by the voters in that trustee area.
The district is holding an online public meeting on July 13 to hear feedback. Residents can also learn how to submit maps of interest. Click the button below to learn about the election process.

Maintenance Projects This Week
This week, we replaced 12 tons of failed asphalt on Ralston Avenue between Hiller Street and Kedith Street.
Public Works staff have filled potholes continuously along this stretch as a temporary fix until its rehabilitation which is scheduled for 2025.
Several sections have degraded beyond the treatment of pothole filling and as a result staff used a grinder to remove the top lift of asphalt in these areas and replace it with new asphalt.
Hallmark Drive Traffic Signal Repair
We also worked with vendors to resolve extended red light time at the intersection of Ralston Avenue and Hallmark Drive.
We noticed the traffic signal was experiencing vehicle detection problems that caused extensive red light time for drivers on Hallmark, some drivers waiting up to 10 minutes. Thanks for those who reported the issues.
This system was reset giving all directions of traffic a minimum amount of green light time while staff investigated the problem.
Once the traffic detection problems were identified, Public Works staff did software updates including detection zone modifications. The traffic signal then went back to normal operation while staff monitored closely for any trouble.
We thank our residents who reported issues and welcome any further reporting should you experience a wait at an intersection or two minutes or more. Our email is pworks@belmont.gov or call us at 650-595-7425.
Summer Infrastructure Projects
Ralston Avenue Pavement Project Has Started
We have begun the Ralston Avenue Pavement Rehabilitation Project, expected to conclude in late August.
During the project's work hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., expect reduced traffic lanes and some closures on side streets off Ralston Avenue. Short closures of driveways may be required, but emergency access will be provided at all times.
|
The work will take place on Ralston Avenue between South (pictured above, westbound Ralston Avenue at South Road) Road and Villa Avenue (pictured at right, eastbound Ralston Avenue at Villa Avenue.
Did You Know? The project will use a sustainable cold-in-place recycled method of pavement rehabilitation, which involves pulverizing and reusing the existing asphalt layer.
This method of repaving greatly reduces truck trips for off-haul and import of material, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and is more sustainable while ensuring a smooth surface and long pavement life. Click on the button below to learn more about this project.

Sewer Rehabilitation Project
We're working to improve our aging sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure and we're in the final weeks of this project.
On the weeks of June 26 and July 3 the contractor is planning on conducting work on South Road at Debbie Lane and at Miramar Terrace, and in the easement between Alameda de las Pulgas/Villa Ave north of Ralston Avenue.
The work will include pipe fusing, sawcutting, CCTVing, pipebursting, and some open trench work.
Residents have been notified and traffic control is in place.
Until the end of July, expect work crews in various locations in our city performing work on existing pipes, rehabilitating manholes, conducting pipe replacement, and reconnecting service laterals.
For any questions regarding this project, call Senior Civil Engineer Bozhena Palatnik at 650-585-7463 or email at pworks@belmont.gov.
Demolition of Vacant City-Owned Buildings Starts in July
We’re working to safely demolish the vacant buildings at the north and south corners of Hill Street and El Camino Real, pictured here.
In July, residents can expect to see contractors, Selway Construction, Inc., begin the demolition that will conclude by the end of the year.
Our Public Works team is working with agency partners to address noise, traffic control, environmental concerns, and debris removal.
Neighbors in the area will receive notices in advance of the demolition work which specific hours and dates of planned work. Schedules can change, and we thank our neighbors for their patience and cooperation during this necessary work.
During work hours and while the project is active please drive, walk, or bike with caution when traveling through the work zone.
Did you know: The demolition of the existing buildings is only the first step to seeing an affordable housing development project come to fruition. We are working with a developer (LINC Housing) to develop the parcels into a 37-unit, 100 percent affordable housing project.
We will continue to update you here on the progress of this and other development projects. To learn more about the LINC Housing project, click on the button below.
