You can Make a Difference for Local Farmers
Did you know? Belmont is a proud member of the Resource Conservation District Compost Broker Program.
Why? The compost collected in Belmont helps farmers and ranchers all over San Mateo County get reduced-cost compost, helping our local farmers thrive and stay local.
How Can You Help? It’s easy, always compost in the green bin. Your efforts to discard your yard scraps and food-based waste in the correct bin helps Belmont to meet its SB1383 goals while supporting county farmers to grow the best, healthiest, and local foods.

Win a Compost Starter Kit
On Saturday at our Earth Day event, someone is going home with this Compost Starter Kit, will it be you?
What's inside? Red Wiggler worms moving mountains for a greener earth. Did you know that these worms eat the food and yard scraps in compost and make it seven times richer in phosphates, five times richer in nitrogen and 11 times richer in potash than average soil?
Come meet the wigglers in person and enter for a chance to take them home.
Open Space Status
We do not like closing open space trails, but we do so for the safety of all park visitors. Here are some friendly reminders about the closures:
- Stay off closed trail sections. Do NOT go around or move barriers or signs. Doing so is in violation of Belmont City Code: 16-34 BCC.
-
Closed trails are Chapparal trail from Elevator to John Brooks, Rambler from John Brooks to Finch, and Rambler from Ohlone to Canyon Creek.
- Trail damage and conditions will be assessed as soon as possible.
- Stay off wet trails. If you leave a tire or footprint, it is too wet.
- Dogs must be on leash at all times.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Local Winners - RethinkWaste Recognizes Belmont's Creative Kids
We're so proud to celebrate the creative talents of our local kids as RethinkWaste announces the winners of its eleventh annual “Trash to Art” Contest, which was open to all 3rd through 5th grade students in the RethinkWaste service area.
The contest challenged students to build a piece of art from normally discarded materials collected at home, school, and around the community. We encouraged all students and classes to think of creative, new ways to reduce and reuse our waste.
|
The agency received 29 total submissions from student artists and class groups. Their original creations included many colorful constructions and incredibly detailed models that look like they belong in a museum.
Belmont students collected prizes in the Grade 4 category; Belmont Oaks Academy's Isabel Y took first place ("Merry-go-Round" is pictured above), and Nesbit Elementary's Parthi P. took second place ("Magical Night" is pictured to the right). Congratulations!
All winners will be recognized at our Earth Day event at the Shoreway Environmental Center on Saturday, April 29, 2023 around noon.
Saturday, April 29, 2023 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shoreway Environmental Center 333 Shoreway Road San Carlos, CA

An Update to our Volunteer Community
Belmont City staff continues to attend to storm damage in our parks and open spaces. As a result, volunteer activities such as park clean up days, trail maintenance, invasive plant removal, etc., remain halted until further notice. We look forward to resuming these volunteer activities soon and are updating our guidelines and process for doing so. More information will follow.
In the meantime, volunteers are always welcome to go “Pliking” (“picking up litter while hiking”) in our parks and on our trails. There are also several one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities available, including the Belmont Historical Society (reopening to the public on April 30), Park Boosters Summer Concert Series, Twin Pines Senior and Community Center, Celebrate the Music (April 30), and more on the City’s website.
And scroll down for the specific call for volunteers this summer.
In anticipation of restarting our park clean up and open space volunteer efforts, if a volunteer organization would like to submit an updated flyer for posting at some of our park bulletin boards, please send it to parksrec@belmont.gov.
All flyers must include the City logo to be posted; please contact us for a digital copy of the logo. Flyers will be posted as space and time permits.

"Belmont has exceeded its housing goals over the past eight years, according to a city report, with officials working on getting the new housing element into compliance.
A housing element is a state-mandated plan for how the city will accommodate new housing units over an eight-year cycle assigned by the Association of Bay Area Governments, a regional planning agency. Belmont was responsible for providing the zoning conditions so 468 units could be built in the 2015 to 2023 cycle, with 732 units built during the eight years."
